We keep getting conflicting info so we thought we might venture here and see if anyone knows the answer to our question.

Our SR is scheduled to PIR on 3/4 and then to A school for Corpsman.  Does anyone know if it will be at GL or is it going to be moved to SA by then?  Our recruiter told us he would start at GL and move at some point to SA but then our SR said right before he left he thought is might be straight to SA.

If we understand correctly, if he stays at GL after PIR, then we might get to spend part of that weekend with him but if its SA then he would probably be leaving pretty quick after?

At what point does our SR know for sure?

Sorry to be full of so many questions, we are new to this.

Your SR will know for sure when he gets his orders while in bootcamp. Most of the instructor's have left the school up here in GL and there are very few HM "A" School students up here...so I am guessing that your son will not be going to "A" School up here.

If the school has moved, they don't start students in the school in one area and the move them to finish the same school in a different area.

Where's the HM 'A' school going to be if it's not GL?
San Antonio
I was told everyone PIRing in Feb and from than on, will not be going to GL for HM "A" School.
Thank you Angie
This is all new to me...my son is PIR on 3/4 and is also corpsman, and I have not been told that A school would be in SA, as a matter of fact, it was never even mentioned!!  When did this all come about??
It has been in the works for almost two years (that I know of) to move the school down there.
My son just PIR on 02/04/2011, and he called me from GL yesterday.  He's moved acrossed the street and is planning on starting HC school there in two weeks.
So very confusing, But thank you Karenmjm.  I am guessing all I can do is sit and wait to hear from our son as to where he goes next.  From FB on the METC page there are many HM coming now to San Antonio, so I assume it might have something to do with what "specialty" they are assigned?  Sorry, don't have all this lingo down yet.  We should get our BS call on 2/28 and then we will know, unless he writes home before then.

Hi everyone!

My son too is to be a corpseman and we have heard conflicting info about A school as well!  Selfishly I am hoping for San Antonio as it would be 10 hours away! (we live in NM)  It is my understanding that by April all the HM training will be in San Antonio so I guess it depends when they can start.  Wes did say that if he goes to San Antonio he will leave Saturday morning on 5th.  Hopefully Wes will call soon and I can grill that kid!

Have a great day everyone!

Great question! My husband's PIR is on 3/25 and I've been assuming his A school will be "across the street" from RTC. I was looking forward to maybe spending the weekend with him - I also assume he will have overnight liberty. I don't plan on changing my reservation with hotel and flight but it'll be good to know how much time I will get to spend with him.

Just found this on wiki, not sure how accurate it is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Hospital_Corps_School

Naval Hospital Corps School is the United States Navy's only basic hospital corpsman school. It is located within Lake County, Illinois, at 601 D St., Bldg 130H, Naval Station, Great Lakes, Illinois 60088. It was established there January 1913. It is an "A" School. Its mission is to field Basic Hospital Corpsmen into the fleet. The mission of Naval Hospital Corps School is to develop, teach, and put forward Corpsmen into the fleet: aboard ships, with United States Marine Corps units, aboard Naval Hospitals and other Department of Defense medical facilities, or elsewhere.

The Great Lakes A-School is due to close the after the last class graduates on July 16, 2011. The school will relocate to the Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.[1]

Since my SR will graduate in March, he can still attend A school at GL.
