How many of you plan  on or have gone to graduation? It is a long distance for us , my husband has not flown since he was a teenager  and I'm not sure I could get him on a plane anyway!  We are from a small town  so  city traffic seems intimidating to me though my husband is a truck driver. (He HATES traffic, too)  Our son doesn't go to boot camp until Feb 23 ( his 21st birthday!) but I am trying to work this whole thing out in my head. I have look at airfare/hotel/car pkgs and about choked!

Karen yes a birth certificate and ss card should be fine
Thank you.  I am trying to get all the small details figured out.

I love that you are posting this!  Graduation is a big deal, but challenging!  We are faced with simular issues!  We might have to drive to get there!  for us that is 24 hrs and 33 mins  :(   I wish the navy had a program to help parents get to the graduation sp we can be there to support  the graduation our sailor's, and our son's and daughters are counting on us attending!  STRESSS :)  I guess we can play the lotto.  I wish you and your family blessings!

I so understand your stress, but I promise you, within one second of seeing those great big garage doors open up  slowly and you see your Sailor's unit step forward, you will never remember the 24 hour car ride!  I have CHILLS just telling you... it was an amazing sight!  There are huge garage doors that open slowly from the bottom up and you see these awesome men and women march in formation and you look for your group by their unit flag.. it's awesome!  Make the car trip part of the fun...  When we got close, I cried just bec I knew I was seeing my son soon.  And we weren't even there!  Make the drive, slowly, carefully and make SURE the camera is ready...  lots of pics to take!!  Congratulations!!    And get there in enough time to go to the meet & greet the night before!  It's lots of fun and you meet the moms and dads of the other kids in this graduation class!  Take your time.  Ask relatives for gas money... why not?? And advance on future Christmas presents...lol.
You described it perfectly and I got chills again reading yours it's truly amazing I cried so hard and was tottally shaking when MY SAILOR walked thru some doors!  I have never in my life expereienced anything like it.  Ok birth was great but their accomplishments WOW - So worth it!
Does anyone know of a RV park near the Great Lakes base? We are bringing our motorhome so our kittys and dog can go with us. our recruit wants to see his Kitty cat when we go for the graduation. If anyone knows please let me know
There is one, im sure bec my son's childhood friend who graduated with him had parents who came with their RV.  I think it's about 30 miles away from base.  If you're self-contained, there is a Walmart about 4 miles from the base.  I think they allow RVs to park.  Google it and you will find it Im sure!  Good luck and congratulations!!!!
how can we print out pass???
go to rtc.pao@navy.mil click on upcoming graduation and type in the password your sailor gave you in his/her first letter (the one that told you his/her address and wish list for the people atttending his/her graduation.  It will say in there parking pass password.  Print this out and when you enter ther naval gate have it on you dash board.  make sure you have your driver's liscenses of every one in the car and their ss cards.  they will be asking for them.   leave very early it gets congested.  we got to great lakes at @ 715 am and didn't get into the gate until 8:30am.
Try taking the train, that was half the cost of flying, and definetly less stressful than driving!!
