Also, my husband is supposdly a grad and go, staying in Great Lakes. I know he will have to spend about 5 hours away checking into his A school, however, will we be able to see him after those 5 hours, and on Saturday and Sunday after that? January 28 at 9:42am

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command:  Yes, he will have liberty for the rest of the weekend after he is done with the check-in process. He will find out whether or not he receives overnight liberty after he has checked into his school.January 28 at 11:16am

Okay, this is the official word from RTC and not information from any other websites that are not reliable sources of information. No recruits that graduate on Friday fly out of the area on Friday. They might fly out at 2 a.m. Saturday, but... that is not Friday; that is Saturday.

Recruits who are in THU (Temporary Holding Unit) might fly out on a Friday, but not graduates on the same day.

Grad & Go's are only those recruits who are checking into their A School on Friday after graduation.
Perhaps RTC has changed things over the last two years, however....my son did indeed graduate AND fly out to his A school in California on Friday (the same day).  So it has happened.
Question by Carol(Ship 12 Div 091) Feb 15, 2000
If the recruits are Grad & Go to  "A" school in Great Lakes.  Where do we pick them up?  Does anyone know?

Answer by himmiemom Feb 15, 2011
They are moved usually right after PIR to another area on the base.  There is also a different gate you will go in.  Not the same gate as PIR or after PIR.  You will get all that info from your sailor after PIR.  I had a friend who's sailor moved her stuff from the RTC to the A school side.  It took approx 5 hours till they were able to see her again after PIR.  But, good thing was they had her the entire weekend for liberty including overnights!!! Not all divisions get that.
This is the RTC responce to my question about family transporting new sailors to A school

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command We provide the transportation. They are not allowed to change their travel itinerary.
6 hours ago · U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command As an added note, perhaps some families are confused as the recruits who graduated at Christmas were allowed to go home and schedule their own travel from home to their next command for A School. Aside from that specific group, all recruits are required to travel to A School with the Navy

Once the new Sailor has checked into A school at GL then they call their family to be picked up. THEN they can be transported by family...but only those G&G to GL for A school and ONLY after they have checked into A school.
This was offically posted today from the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC) Facebook Page.

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Grad & Go refers to those recruits who are staying in Great Lakes and that is firm. We are in the process of correcting the RDCs who seem to believe that Grad & Go also refers to those recruits flying out of state on Saturday.

Even our transportation department no longer uses the term "Grad & Go." The confusion lies in the fact that a couple years recruits also flew out of state on Friday afternoons following the graduation ceremony. RTC stopped doing that a couple of years ago.

So, regardless if your recruit states he/she was told they are Grad & Go and are leaving Saturday, that is the incorrect term for them. They are a Saturday departure.

Other websites using the term Grad & Go for Saturday departures only add to the confusion.

So, once again, here is the official RTC definition as to what is a Grad & Go recruit: Recruits checking into A School at Great Lakes on the same day as graduation.
Officially from the RTC Facebook Page: Now they are not using the term at all:

what does grad and go mean?
about an hour ago · Like ·

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command It's an obsolete term. It used to refer to recruits who flew out of state for A School within hours of graduation. Then it referred only to those recruits staying in Great Lakes for A School. Now it doesn't mean anything.

Recruits who stay in Great Lakes for A School check into their school the same day as graduation. Those going out of state for A School will fly out the following day unless there is an issue with flight availability, then they might be delayed a day or two.
Years ago, some recruits would fly out of state for A School on the same day as graduation. They were the original ones referred to as Grad & Go. Then RTC quit the practice of flying them on the same day as grad. The recruits who stayed in ...Great Lakes and were checking into their A School the same day as graduation were the ones who were then referred to as Grad & Go. Some recruits didn't fly out until days later.

At present, all recruits depart RTC either the same day as graduation or the following day. Thus, the term Grad & Go no longer means anything because they all "going" the same day or the next day.

Well, no wonder I was confused when my son said they were all grad and go.  I thought maybe we had the entire week-end together.  Some of the other moms relay staying thru Sun. to maximize time.  Made reservations for the whole week-end anyway.  We'll see what he can do.  Thanks for the info.  Tofumom
