OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I'm finding conflicting information and hoping that maybe a recruiter or the like can give me the low down on Minimum weight.

My Son is 5'10 weighs 125lbs. and leaves for BC in a few Months.  He's told he needs to be at 132 or he can't ship out.  The info I've found is that Minimum shipping weight of 123.. Waiverable to 111. This kid has been doing everything to gain and just can't seem to really get much past the 125 maybe 127.  High Metabolism I guess.  Plus he really really needs to get into shape but is afraid to work out to much for fear of loosing weight.  

Is he ok the way he is or should he try for a waiver just in case he can't get to the 132?  Are waivers hard to get for this?

My daughter had some health issues when she was younger and her body burned calories faster then she could take in.   We had to work with a Dietitian to get her over this hump.  She had to drink 3 Ensure-plus a day plus meals and healthy snacks to gain the weight and she did.  Ensure plus is loaded with vitamins and has a lot of extra healthy fat to make you gain weight.  That is much healthier to do than milk shakes.  Good luck!

My husband has the same problem, they had him on 10K calories a day and no weight gain.  He's still like that in his 50s.  What finally worked was weight lifting; with whey protein shakes.  Plus four to six meals a day, and a lot of sweet and sour sauce. LOL.

 

The ensure-plus is a good idea, but combine it with extra protein.  Slim-fast or similar drinks as an extra beverage may be more inexpensive and just as effective.  Lots of choices out there.

 

As a Depper, does he have access to a base?  Most have a free nutritionist he could work with.

He's been doing the whey protein but I think not really on regular basis until just recently.  He's afraid to work out hard because he thinks he'll drop weight.  keeping my fingers crossed that the trainer he's hired put him on the right track..May will be here soon.  His brother is shorter and was skinny too and he didn't have a problem with shipping.  Darn if I can remember what he weighed though

Our Navy base in about 1 or so away..

Anti-M is right about several small meals a day.  I wouldn't try Slim Fast drinks because those are more for loosing weight where Ensure-plus is for gaining weight plus it's loaded with fat.  The dietitian had my daughter eat 3 meals a day with the Ensure-plus 3 times a day, and 2 snacks.  She wasn't allowed to do any exercise until she reached her ideal weight which happened in 1 month.  They did this to slow up her metabolism.  She then was allowed to slowly start an exercise progam and they took awayt 2 Ensure pluses a day to see if she could maintain her weight which she did.  They eventually took away the last ensure because she was still gaining weight.  She's a high school athlete and runs about 55-60 miles a week and can now maintain her weight without supplements.  She has it down to a science now.  She eats a carbo - protein sanck before she runs, eats three meals a day, and has three snacks a day.  Her snacks are usaully penaut butter crackers or a banana and peanut butter with chocolate milk, or fruit, baked lay potato chips, and milk.  Good luck to your son.  My son starts bootcamp in April.
Slim fast will only make you lose weight as a meal replacement.  If you drink it with meals, it packs on the pounds.

 I was also told if you really want to go up in weight fast, mix ensure plus  with a protien mix and make it like a shake with ice cream. It's supposed to taste really good and you reach your target weight fast.  We didn't do this with my daughter because they wanted her to have a slower weight gain.

Funny you mention ice cream,  My son made a Whey shake today to take to work. He stirred it then said "yuck" I mentioned putting some flavor in like chocolate syrup and he said it tastes better when you mix it with ice cream.  Guess he discovered that on is own.  I told him about the ensure plus so i think he's going to get some.  Next I'll mention the snack foods you talked about.   I asked him today what he weighed at his check last week.  126 needs to be 132 not a a lot but....This may sound stupid, do you think he can do it before May 3rd and get his endurance up?

I can't thank you enough for all the suggestions.  This journey has been so stressful first started with a not so good recruiter..fixed that..now the weight..Ahhhh

Of course he can do it! You have another 6-7 weeks. In May you will be posting on here that he gained the weight and is all set to go. Looking forward to seeing that post.

I'm sure he won't have any trouble gaining the weight.  I think my daughter gained about 10 pounds in a month so I'm sure your son will gain it.  My son was away at college last fall while he's been waiting to go in and gained weight.  He's lost 25 pounds since Christmas so he's at his target weight now.  Good Luck!

UPDATE:

As of yesterday his weight is 133. Now the challenge is to keep it up and get into shape, needs to shave 5 min off the run, Yikes!!

I'm glad he was able to gain the weight.  I'm sure he'll be able to get in shape by the time he goes.
