My son's recruiter told us that they will pull all of his wisdom teeth at BC. Do they do this during the processing days? I can't imagine having to start the intense workouts 2 days after having all 4 teeth pulled out! What if they end up with dry socket or something? Will they have to be put in a different group then graduate later? Another friend said to be sure he knows he doesn't HAVE to get them pulled but that they will "highy reccommend"it.

Hello,  My daughter had this done 4 days into boot camp.  According to her they pulled her teeth and she was sent right to bed for 2 days.  Someone (whoever was in charge) had to make sure she wasn't bleeding and was drinking. They also made sure she took pain meds.    By the end of the 2 days she was board.  They were very good to her.  The next day she developed a dry socket so back to medical she went and they put "something very nice in there and it stopped the pain immediately.  I was very concerned about this however,  The Navy did a great job with her.  There was no running or anything strenous until she was well healed.  I hope this helps.  She started Boot Camp in July of 2010

It is common practice to have the wisdom teeth removed in bootcamp (my Sailor only had 2 removed) - this is so that they don't end up with an emergency impaction somewhere at or under the sea and not be able to extract them.  It's not always done early on in the training (unless that's changed in the last 2 years)... My guess is mine had it done week 3 or 4.

Our regular dentist recommended they be removed about 4 months before he left for bootcamp.  Thanks to this site I knew the Navy would take care of it so we waited.  And therefore saved $$  8-)

It is common enough that the Navy dentists are skilled at extraction, and the RDCs know how to take care of the recruit.

Doesn't have to?  Yeah, like any recruit would refuse.

If they will come in crooked, they will.  I've had a wisdom tooth out which had not come through, although not by the Navy.  Doesn't hurt or heal any differently.
My daughter has all 4 wisdom teeth, and they didnt pull them in BC, and they were showing a little. Not everyone is the same.
My son also has all 4 wisdom teeth and they did not pull his either.  Most in his division did get theirs out.  It's just common practice they don't want them on a ship in the middle of nowhere and have problems with their wisdom teeth!
Not really. Like I said, I've had it done and it was no worse than when the other two came out and they were through the gum.
They don't get behind, the extractions are timed so the two days of SIQ don't hold them back.
He did end up getting all 4 pulled but said it wasn't a big deal really- but that's kind of the way he he is, he won't complain either if he thinks it will mess up graduating....
How soon after he arrived did they end up extracting them? My son had 2 bottom only but I was concern myself. Hes been in BC 15 days now.
My son had his done in bootcamp too.  He said that they pulled them and then gave them something for the pain and two days off.  Not bad at all.
He went in on the 23rd and they pulled them on the 9th.
