My daughter left this week from Norfolk on the USS Whidbey Island,  she saidshe'll be gone  6-9 months.  She's only been in the Navy 8 months so this is all still new for me.  Have no idea how we get in touch with each other... proud of her.. but miss her so....

Welcome, this site is great. Be sure to search for a group specific to her ship. She should be able to communicate with you through her navy e-mail. She should also be able to give you her address on the ship. It will quite an adjustment for her and you as well. My son is on the USS Ronald Reagan. He is currently deployed so we send care packages with different things from home. But since this is her first time away, as soon as you get the address you might want to send her something home cooked, cookies usually travel well.

Where do you live here in Missouri? I am in Liberty.

I'm about 45 minutes outside of St. Louis.  She said she didnt have an email yet when I talked with her.. hopefully she will get that and email me soon.  Yes, I'll bake some cookies and send some favorite snacks.. she was frightened and didnt find anyone to be overly helpful ... such a culture shock from where we come from.   Thanks for the reply.

Hi sweetie

Our USS RR Mom said it already.  Care packages are great.  Have you found your Ombudsman yet?  That helps.  We've got some great Moms out her way too--you can also join one of their family pages.

Let me know how I can help. We have some really fantastic MO Moms here.  Some of them would be happy to meet up with you.  I'm another 20 minutes east of St Louis, but available through private messaging if you need to chat about something.

Navy Mom ((((hugs))))

Carol

Hi Carol,

What exactly is an Ombudsman?  And how do I go about locating one for this area?  (North of Kansas City, MO)?

Michelle

MK..an ombudsman is a liason between the families of sailors and the location of their assignment, ie ship, duty station, etc. My son is on the Reagan and we have an ombudsman page on facebook and through the Reagan military site. They can help if you need to get in touch with your sailor or any other type of information regarding the ship or duty station.

Thanks!  So is this the person I would contact if I have a question about his transition from Pensacola to Whidbey Island?  He is supposed to have leave after graduation July 22  but we don't know any more than that.  I don't understand how the transportation works, and just basically have a lot of questions.  How do I find this person?

There's a great Vinson page on facebook, too.  Molly's Adopt a Sailor has a son on there.

Let me know if you need anything at all.  Great looking family!

Hello fellow Missourian's my son just left for boot camp about 11 days ago, just received his official letter today and mailed off 7 pieces of mail to him, it's been hard and had a terrible crying spell today when I first saw his graduation date was 12-8-11, he flipped the month and date and it should be 8-12-11, it took me several hours to calm down and then I figured it out.  He is our only child and the first time away from home this long.  I live 80 miles from St. Louis in a small town of Eolia, Missouri, If I can do anything for my new found friends please let me know.

Hi, eolia, my son just graduated 8/12/11 from ship 10/division 257 also.  I live down by the Lake of the Ozarks.  Where is your son going to A school?

My son graduated 8/19/11. Ship 10/ div 265. I bet they ran into each a time or two. Where at the Lake are you? I am south of Boonville in a small town called Speed. My sis ter lives close to the Lake.
