Not a netbook, the screen is too small for what he wants.  How much are you looking to spend?  Or is he paying you for it?  Because they do make laptops tailored to gamers, and those run a little higher. I like Best Buy becuase I can get a good warranty and replacement guarantee.

NEVER buy electronics at Wal-Mart.  They are cheaper for a reason.

I like the ASUS brand I'm using right now.  My geek friends hate Dell with a passion. We had a Gateway which has lasted forever too.  If that helps. (My geek friends used to work on the Geek Squad, so I trust their advice).

Some concers: mailing a laptop to an FPO/APO address requires a customs form. Everyone who handles that package will know there is a high priced item in it (do not lie on customs forms!!!). You can only insure it through the USPS until it goes into the military mail system, not until it is in his hands.  I always tell people there are risks sending valuables into that system.  Some theft does occur, but packages get lost, and even entire mail bags have fallen into the sea, never to be seen again. Not all packages are handled with care, if you know what I mean.

Send a regular package or two to see how fast they get there and in what condition.

Well, I was hoping to keep it under 500, but I have also heard that for what he wants it for, I will have to pay more.  I also had quite a few people tell me the ASUS is the way to go.  This is very helpful.  I did mail him something on the base, so I remember the custom form.  Makes me a little nervous to send something like that, so I will give it some thought.  I do have a box going out this weekend with some other not-so-valuable items, and I will do another test run in a few weeks.  Thanks again!
