Okay, here's the situation.
My fiancee's ship will be moved into their barracks (guess they've been on a waiting list for like...EVER!) sometime around the end of May. He's excited, as well he should be, but the problem arises that we aren't married yet. Obviously, I want to move into the barracks with him or get an apartment on/near base (he's currently in VA and I'm in GA taking care of my aunt) but what's going to happen with the marriage and housing?
In other words, will I be okay to stay with him while we're engaged in his current barracks?
Will they move us into/are there separate barracks for married couples?
What qualifies someone for BAH versus barracks?
I'm sorry, we're both new to this and as he's occupied with the ship I've got my family to take care of, so any advice/help here would really be appreciated. Hope everyone's having a wonderful spring so far <3

Another thing check the wives and girlfriends group they would know best.
You can NOT live in the barracks with him! Barracks are for single people.
ONLY people who are married get BAH, OR if they are E4 single with over 4 years in the Navy and there is no room in the barracks, and E-5 not married get BAH.
Unless you are married, the USN doesn't see you as anything, nor does the Sailor get any bennies for a fiancee.
IF you are caught in the barracks, your fiancee will get into trouble and be moved back on the ship.
Once you get married, he wil be required to move out of the barracks as he will than get BAH to live out in town. Once you are married if you want to live in base housing, he has to put you on the list to get into that. BUT you can't be on the list until you are married. Depending where you are, the list can be either just a few weeks wait time, or months. I have even seen a year wait time.
Until you are married, you are welcome to live anywhere you would like,if you want to get an apt near the base and live there, you can. BUT he isn't going to get any extra money to help out with the housing cost.
According to him, the "barracks" ARE the hotel rooms. It's the um.
...I forget the name.
It's the on-base huge suites and inn. He stayed in similar "barracks" in Maine and I got to stay with him when I visited. I wonder if there's a huge miscommunication here on what the "barracks" are.
Recommend he check with his LPO, also he should have signed paper work that states all the rules he is required to follow. If other's are not following the rules that is not a reason for him not to follow the rules.
Barracks...is where Sailors live while they are in training, or if the ship has a set of barracks rooms the Sailor lives in. Barracks are rooms on a base that may look similar to a hotel room.
Just spoke with him on the phone and cleared up the miscommunication. The place they're staying is temporary housing, not barracks. But the guys on the ship including the chief, use the term loosely apparently. That's what we were all confused about.
It's the Navy Lodge something (already forgot the name again) but anywho, that clears that up. Thank you for your help :D I truly appreciate it and I'm sorry again for the confusion.
Barracks refers to where Sailors live on base and Sailors are not permitted overnight guests there. There are Navy Lodges on bases where visitors may stay. I've never heard of a miltary hotel being known as the barracks. Your fiance needs to double check what he is referring to because I really do believe he is misleading you on this one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barracks I know Wikipedia is not the final say in things of this sort, but even it defines barracks as follows: Barracks are specialised buildings for permanent military accommodation.....
So you can stay in the Navy Lodge or other similar military inn on base, but you cannot under any circumstances, short of enlistment yourself, stay in the barracks--and if you were to enlist, you would not be permitted to stay in the same room within the barracks with your fiance.
Gateway Suites is on some bases, something in between a barracks and the Lodge. Yes, they put the overflow sailors on TAD/at school in them. Yes, they can have visitors there. Yes, she has to be accompanied anywhere on the base, so she'd be tied to the room without him.
Why it is being called the barracks is just weird.
lol so I talked to him again and he says I can for sure stay in the barracks. He said that men have women over ALL the time whether they're wives or "random girls" sooooooo. Yeah.
Also how long does it take from the time we present the marriage certificate until the BAH gets approved?
