OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My son will be graduating high school this Saturday and he was sworn in last Wednesday.  He will be leaving July 28th for boot camp (July 26th is his 18th birthday) I am having a really hard time dealing with this as he is the first to leave home.  I cry every day because Im am very scared.  Im very proud of him but for selfish reasons I don't want him to leave.  He wants to be a Navy Seal and he also wanted a job in communication/Intelligence which they do not have so he signed up for Airman program.  Said he would be on an aircraft carrier doing whatever....can someone please help me out and explain this to me.  Explain everything cause I'm lost.  If he gets into BUDS he wont have to do that job because the Seal program will be first priority but still that is a ways off.  I know nothing about anything and I feel like when he leaves for boot camp I am shipping him off to a place where he will be alone.  How easy do they make friends, feel comfortable and is boot camp bad?  I just need to comforting from some parents that have been there and already knows.  This is what he really wants to do and I know he is scared too but excited at the same time.  His recruiter told me about this site and said it would help me.  Thank you for listening to me ...Liz

Liz - I'll let the ladies handle the mom type of emotions that happen, but I will help you understand the Navy part of your questions.  What was his exact rating (job) he going in as?  Here is a link that will give you an idea of what each rating does.

Per boot camp, yea everyone hates it the 1st couple weeks but come about week 6 the letters you receive will be excellent.  Everyone usually says boot camp wasn't that bad, but they don't want to do it again.  Here is a normal day-per-day list of things they do in bootcamp.  You may want to give this list to you soon to be sailor....

Hi Liz,

 

Maybe our sons will meet.  My son is Aaron.  He is going to be a diver too.  He originally wanted to be a SEAL too, he was going to do aircraft first, have eye surgery and then go to buds, but they said they changed the rules and he couldn't cross over.  That is when he chose diver.  He is happy with his choice as he will have a unique career and have adventure as well. I love him so much.  I feel pretty much like you do I am sure.

Diver mom, Liz posted this back in May. Unless her recruit was separated, he should be going to A or maybe even C school somewhere. Your son and her son won't be in contact until your sons completes his specialty training.  Here is a group for moms of Divers.
