Submarine moms are special:

--- All of us have boys, "SAILORS!"

 --- Who serve on "boats,"

 --- With whereabouts unknown, and

--- We only get sporadic, short emails while they're out!

Tell us where your sailor serves...

Cheryl, thanks.  I'm on the right track then.  Topics: weather, spring arriving, books, basketball, his

mom (who he lost shortly before this cruise).  I hadn't thought of world news but I'll include a bit.

I'm hoping this is his qualifying cruise but don't know that or time frame.  I get a notice from the

Navy after each email (sending at least one a day).  I know several other family members are doing

their part, too.  I did get one email from him. And I thought of numbering and dating as well.  This

is a huge improvement on the V-mail of WW2.  I get so much good information from the Navy4Moms.

Kath, if we seem comfortable, it's just because our kids aren't on their first cruise!  If this is his first, he has virtually NO free time... when on duty, he's got the worst work assignments and someone is always looking over his shoulder to make sure he's doing it right.  When off duty, he'll be hassled by the older crew to be constantly working on his qualifications for the Dolphins.  Literally, he may not get to be still until he lies down.

Remember that with any military service, "No news is GOOD news."  Just keep emailing him as often as possible -- doesn't matter about what, they just want to read words from you (e.g. sports standings for his favorite teams, news from the high school, what you're fixing for dinner, what the dog is doing, who you telephoned today, etc., etc., etc.!)  If you don't know how to email him on the boat, there's a blog post thoroughly explaining it on my personal page.

I promise that everything gets better once the Dolphins are on, because then he's regarded as pulling his weight.  But, feel free to vent here... it's why we're here!  Hugs, k.

Kaye S.  Thank you for the info on how busy they will be on their first patrol.  My sailor will be going out on his first soon, your words are comforting.

Peg

:-D......k.

Thank you so much K your words are so encouraging.

My son is also on the charlotte.. It's definitely difficult right now, especially with whats going on through out the world.. The not knowing of even a general vicinity is killing me....  We haven't heard from him since beginning of February.. Last email said.  communications will be scarce if at all for next few months...  accept my friends request and we can exchange emails :)  Love, Sponge Mom

I got a tour of the Charlotte two weeks ago while at Pearl, it was fabulous!  I don't recall seeing your son but if you talk to him, please ask him to tell FC2 S....... that I said thanks for the great tour!  What a nice boat!
This information is a comfort to all the first timers.  Many thanks.
You're right, Kaye. When Matt first arrived at his boat, he wasn't even qualified to use the telephone! They rode his butt constantly to finish his quals. At times he had to sleep in uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, had extra duty in the galley and had no free time for relaxation such as a movie or play a video game. They expected him to be studying! It didn't help that they were shorthanded at the time and he was going through the end of his marriage.

Kaye,

Thank you for this insight!  My daughters boyfriend is on his first time out.  She hasn't heard from him since the 14th of April.  I keep telling her "No news is good news."  I am constantly looking for something to give her reassurance, and I think you response will her tremendiously!  She is getting the notices back from the sub, so we are  guessing that is a good thing.

Notices are good for letting you know your emails were sent to the boat.  There are several blog posts on my personal page that you (and daughter) might read to learn how to live with a submariner, including one with detailed information on sending emails to a sub.  Welcome aboard! k.

Thank you :) !
