What is your advice?

"One thing I do recommend, if it's all possible. Be sure to try and attend their graduation. You send the Navy a teenager, and the next time you see them, they have grown and matured, and you will be in utter awe. I wish I could re-meet his company commander and tell him about the most astonishing young man that they helped on his way. He's gone from the obnoxious teenager to a man that is so very proud of his leadership skills and knowledge. The Navy was the best thing for him, and it's amazing to see the transformation over the years." – Jean Cabral

Ok next question,
Now I am new with a child in A school, but I am just getting prepared.
1) are you assigned to a ship, or a base, then assigned to whatever ship that is at that base ?
My son would like an air craft carrier and be in japan. So what comes first the chicken or the egg ? LOL
2) When they are on the ocean there cell phones dont work, what do you guys think works best ? Suspend there phone, and reactivate when they get to America soil, or just let the phone contract expire. And have them do a pay as you go phone ?
3) If they are stationed oversea's, how do you ever get to talk to them ? Phone Cards from pay phones ?
Ok enough questions for now ........ LOL you know I will be back with more soon.
Thanks
these are great questions Molly!
When you get assigned to a ship, you will be sent to that base. If the ship gets moved, you will too. As far as getting put on a carrier in Japan, the one that is going there is the USS George Washington (CVN-73). If your son asks to go to the Washington, and gets sent there, he will go to Japan.
My old roommate, and one of my best Navy friends is on the Washington now, they're leaving on a world tour next month before they have the homeport change.
As far as phones, I've been told to get phone cards. There are phones on the ship (or so I've been told, being on a sub, we don't have them), and you can call out from there.
I'm planning on getting a prepaid phone whenever I get to Europe and just pay for minutes as I need them. If your son ends up going to Japan, he should get a phone there, as they're pretty common.
If he is stationed overseas, it would be easiest to get a cell there I think.
Hey Jake, Karen
Thanks you for answering this, it answers all my questions :)
and for the insider info. I will pass it on to my son.
BTW Jake, it is pretty cool to have a military man here helping us moms out, Thanks for taking the time with us :)
Be careful out there, and from the bottom of heart Thank you for serving !
Hi Jake, I just read your note, and my son is on this ship. They just left out of Virginia, and first stop Rio. How very exciting for him and others of his shipmates on the vessel. One of his friends from High School is on the Kitty Hawk soon to be retiring and will also be stationed on this vessel. I'm looking for others that have their sailors on this ship. Best to all and thanks for info.
Jan,
This is a wonderful poem. This is all new for us. I know that it will help, as my son leaves for boot camp 4/28. Thank you for writing this and sharing it.
Susan
I heard more from Luke (Army) when he was in Iraq. He bought a computer and we talked almost every other day by My Space instant messinger.
Hi ladies, we use a video cam back and fourth, it's always nice to see
Hi Karen, Iraq is 8 hours ahead of us - it was 9 before the time change and they didn't move up. So my boyfriend and I do my night time - his morning - I stay up late and he gets up early. We web cam - it is the most wonderful invention ever! He's been out on missions for the last 8 days and so we haven't been able to and boy do I miss seeing his smiling face.
Luke got his in Iraq. He was stationed in Germany first, then holding in Kuwait, then Iraq.
I'm not sure if they can purchase it there or not - my boyfriend's roomate is their communications guy so he set it all up. If not - I'm sure you could send him one. I have a logitech and it works great, as long as the internet connetion is good. He has high speed - but their high speed is not like our highspeed, but it still works pretty good. Sometimes we will have a bit of a delay. Both people don't have to have it - if he has the web cam and you don't - you can see him but he just couldn't see you. We use yahoo messenger - but his roommate says the web cam works better with msn messenger. Where will your son be stationed? My boyfriend is at Camp Prosperity.
Hmm - yea I'm not sure where that is exactly either. If your son likes PB and Butterscotch let me know - I have a great recipe for cookies that travel good in the heat. I've sent them to J.W. several times and he loves them. You can't send chocolate after a certain time because it will melt. It gets so hot there in the summer - he said it was already just smoldering hot there. Yes my boyfriend will be coming back to Fort Riley, KS and I will be there with his family to greet them all back :). He does have mid-tour in July so he gets to fly back for 15 days and then his whole team comes back for good in November.
