Christine,
We have a terrific San Fran Bay area group. You will have a wonderful home base. We have a BBQ in Walnut Creek in July. We met earlier this year for dim sum in Oakland. We had a luncheon for newcomers at the San Jose Country Club in Feb and in January we met at a pizza place in Petaluma. Here is the link. San Fran Bay Area Navy Families just click on this link and click +JOIN when you get to the group's page. We were at Pensacola for our son's graduation from OCS. We met many young sailors who were Aviation Technicians. What a fantastic looking group! They (men and women) all looked like they were enjoying themselves. They all walked with purposeful strides. Once you know for sure (from your form letter) when your son's PIR is, be sure to join that group (a group will be formed by someone or you can start it). You are going to be so proud when you see him at PIR. Look forward to hearing more about your sailor and meeting you. Let me know if you need anything.
BQB.
Christine; Welcome to The Navy! Consider yourself fortunate that you have known all along that your son will be leaving for A school the day following graduation. When my son was in bc, it seems all of the "old" ways of doing things needed to be changed by the powers that be in the middle of our son's "stay".
We drove to graduation (PIR) from Washington State. We took a "small" detour to Omaha, NE to pick Grandma up, and then headed North to Chicago. When our son left for bc, we "thought" we would have the entire weekend with him (knowing that he had to be back on base everynight by a certain time). Well, all of my great planning was for not. I had booked a suite (2bed, 2 ba, kitchen etc...) for four nights, and we only needed it for two. The hotel was very accommodating and did not charge us for the other 2 nights. We arrived for graduation at o'dark early (my slang for military time) and found seats in the drill hall with no problem. We had about 2 hours to wait until grad. started!! :(
Once Liberty was called we had 8 hours with our new Sailor as he had to be back on base by 7pm. His bus left for the airport the following morning at 4AM, and yes, we met him at the airport to spend as much time as we could with him befor he left for A school around 10ish. His plane left, we headed back to the hotel to get Grandma (she was smart enough to stay in bed!!) and our luggage, and head back to Omaha!
Yes, this is a very expensive trip, there is no way around it. I would not have missed it for the world. Thank goodness for a large tax return!!! :) A couple of words to the wise: Take a LOT of change in all different denominations for the TONS of tolls on the freeways in Chicago. Most are not manned toll booths, you just throw your change into this big vat!! Second...if your driving in any way shape or form...invest in or borrow a GPS Unit. We bought one before we left and it was THE BEST investment of our trip. The streets in Chicago are not marked well at all. Very easy to get lost many times over!!
Third...it is going to be HOT and HUMID in Chicago in August. We were there on May 5th and for us the weather was perfect. Pack accordingly, stay hydrated, and enjoy the very few precious hours you will hav with your son. If your flying, check our Frontier Airlines. They fly into Milwaukee, NOT O'Hare. If you book now and buy the classic or classic plus fare, and need to change or cancel for any reason, they will refund your $$$ 100%. We had to use this feature on this trip, and canceling was very easy.
ASAP. Prices are going up every hour it seems. Make sure you go to www.frontierairlines.com to make your reservations. You can also pick what seat(s) you want! Have fun and Congratulations.
