thanks for replying(: I am now in a DEP meeting. I send a lot of letters to recruits who are in Boot right now(: I love writing them and making there day better(: I will def be joining those two groups. thanks for all the helpful tips (:

My daughter is AO what would you like to know?

There are AOs that are ships company, that are assigned to one ship, they could work in the magazine, bomb farm, or bringing it up to the deck. There are AOs that are with squadrons, that are attached to a ship, and basically go wherever the ship goes but can be sent where needed.

It depends on what you want, if you want to assigned to a ship, or a squadron, the squadrons dont necessarily live next to the base where the ship is.

BC in Great Lakes,

A school in Pensacola,FL

C school, in either Pensacola or where your first duty station is.

The better score you get on you first test in A school, will only help you get to pick orders first.

Thanks for all the tips ((: I just signed and would basically want to know what it is like to be an AO(: I dont know much on the job and would like to know any insight you can give me.
thanks

Hello,

My husband leaves for BC Aug 2nd and then A school for AO.

From your experience is it better for him to be assigned to a squadron or ship's company? I am a little unclear about all of that. and by pick orders first what do you mean?

He enlisted last week and ships out so soon so I am trying to get myself together :)

Thank You so much!

I am speaking from daughters opinion, she wanted to be squadron, she didnt want to be ships company. She likes living on an airbase, and they get flown to the ship, they are not on the ship all the time, when they arent out on deployment she actually has no ships near her base. I couldnt say which is better, some like ships company, others like squadron. I think you learn a little more when in the squadron, than always on the ship? but that could not be true. My sailor wanted to be on the deck of a carrier, she wanted to be in the middle of it all, and she is, ships company isnt so much on the deck, and work below deck.

How it works in A school  is that once they start the actual A school for AO, they will take a test in the first week, then they put the class in order, if you got 100 on the first test, you are first in class...right down the line. Who ever is first in the class get to pick first from the orders that are available that day, so if your husband wants to be in a squadron and there are orders for a squadron, and his is first in his class he will pick first. Thats how it works. Be prepared for A school, even though A school for AO is only about 4 weeks, they have other classes they have to take first, and then most have to wait to class up in P'cola, my sailor was there from March-June 25, its not as fast as you may think.

Wow. I can't thank you enough for the information! now I need to find my husband and sit his A** down to read all of this :) lol

Thank You again, and also dont be surprised if I send you another e-mail soon about another silly question that is going through my head. This website has brought me a lot of peace of mind and I am very greatful! thanks again!

Micaela

Your welcome, ask away, if I dont have the answer I know plenty who do! I still ask silly questions and I have been on here for 2.5+ years, its all a learning process.

Once piece of advice, dont worry about boot camp, he will be well taken care of, fed [some actually like the food] a warm bed, medical if needed, and probably be in the best shape of his life when done, and the biggest bonus, hes safe. I know its easy to say dont worry, instead just cheer him on, letters and cards are like gold to them, It will be over before you know it! Save the worry for when they deploy, which will be a while away for him.

Thank You, I know. I am proud of him and encourage him every day. I will keep in touch when another question comes up :) Thanks again!

My husband is an AO.  He took nothing with him to bootcamp.  They give you what you need there.  They just send what you take back home anyway.  He just had the clothes on his back and a cell phone which they sent back.  He is now in school in Pensacola Fl so look forward to that it is really nice here.  They have the 2nd hardest PT here so also look forward to that. He loves every moment of it.  I'm sure you will too.  "If you ain't ordnance you ain't shut your mouth fool" I hear this a hundred times it's part of their marching cadence. LOL!!!!  Good Luck!!!!!
I take that back he did take a wallet with his ID's and debit card and phone card.  Small peice of paper with addresses and numbers on it and a few family photos.  He got to keep all that

My son will not be shipped out until next year...but he already has his job and A School....Into Aviation Ordinance...where are these school's located in the US?

this is a year old thread. But to answer your question, AO school is in Pensacola FL, C school could be in either Pensacola or at his first command. (all depends on his orders)
