OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I was told that you have to have your hair above the collar. Will anything be able to be done with your hair. I happen to have curly hair so when its freshly washed the curls fall at my collar.

Also will I be allowed to braid my hair or wear pony tails or anything?

I have dead blond flat hair, a super short cut saved me because my hair was fly-away fine.  Later in boot camp, I was allowed two gold clips (brown for brunette, black for black hair, etc.) to keep my hair out of my face.  Accessories and luxuries like conditioner are indeed earned by the group.

If you are lucky, the NEX will carry a two in one product.  I don't care for them, but they would suffice in boot camp.  Just think how excited you will be on your first post-graduation shopping trip!

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.  And no worries, eventually, your hair WILL fit under your cap.  You may not care for the length or the style, but it WILL fit.  (I hope you have a sense of humor, it is essential for when boot camp gets weird.)

You will encounter Navy (Angie) and prior Navy (myself and many others). We tend to be concise in writing style and rather direct.  Don't read anything into it, take it as experience getting used to efficient communication!

RTC=Recruit Training Command (Boot Camp)

RDC=Recruit Division Commander (The Petty Officer or Chief Petty Officer who leads the Division)

As you say, when things are in writing, tone is unknown.  It is best to figure the tone of the writer is one of support unless we tell you differently and, believe me, we will tell you.  Some of the time, some of us preface it with something like, "I respectfully disagree...."  Other times, it will not be prefaced as such, but we all want this to be a helpful, cordial site.

Thank you for helping understand this site better, I'm still very new to the site. This site has some amazing information that can help me understand what my life will be like for at least the next five years. I know my mother isn't very hands on so everything I learn here I attempt to relay the information. So once again thank you.
Enjoy your journey.  I hope all goes well for you.
