For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello Navy families! I just got a letter from my son n he said he had a chance to call home but by the time he activated his card he dint UBS time to actually call n talk!! So make sure u activate ur prepaid all-in card before they leave for bootcamp!

My son shipped out yesterday to RTC - Great Lakes. He packed all that the start up manual suggested, and I added his Bible. However, at MEPS, he was told that all would be supplied for him. So basically, he went with the clothing he was wearing, his start up manual, wallet with ID/SS and phone numbers/addresses, and his Debit Card. That is it. Everything else they told him to leave with us. He was allowed a 2 min. phone call when he got on post, long enough to tell me he was there, loved me, and was sending home his clothing he was wearing, in a box. Also no other phone calls permitted for 3 weeks.

My son left for bootcamp on june 8. He took only the clothes on his back and his wallet with ss card. He didn't want to pay to ship his stuff back so he just wore clothes that he could throw away. I got a standard issue memo at the end of last week with two lines of comment from him. Even though it was short, I was happy to hear from him. That letter also included his grad date.

They have to pay for shipping their clothes, shoes, phone, etc. themselves?? What if their not prepared for that?
I'm pretty sure my son thinks the navy pays for the shipping.

Thanks! I don't ship things at all so I didn't have any idea. All he plans on taking with him is the clothes he is wearing, his cell phone and wallet. He will be able to keep his wallet right?

I think my son said that they just deduct the cost out of their pay so don't worry if he has enough money. My son sent his clothes back in this great big box which wasn't 1/3 the way full and if it wasn't for his cell phone coming back he would have had them toss the clothes.

I was told at yesterday ship off meeting for my daughter that EVERYTHING comes out of their pay. They get a debit card issued to them for that purpose as soon as they arrive.

That is correct, they must purchase toiletries and underthings, running shoes, at the NEX (Navy Exchange). The reason is so every recruit will have exactly the same items.
Uniforms do not come out of their base pay, that is a misconception. The Nay puts IN the uniform allowance, and then takes it out. All for accounting purposes. You'll see this with their food allowance on A school too.

what is a standard issue memo? is that from him or the navy? my son leaves tomorrow for boot camp and i am trying to understand everything.

How long did it take to receive the letter? My son got to boot camp on July 12th and we have not received anything. We are just wondering. :)
