Please post advice on why your sailor chose subs or carriers.

My son is in boot camp now but he couldn't make up his mind on carrier or sub duty.  He's going to be a Nuke so those are his only two choices.  What were the reasons that made your sailor choice sub or carrier duty?

My son finished Prototype fall of 2009.  All along he stated he wanted subs.  He was told he would get subs.....until the orders came out.  It all depends on what the openings are when he goes out sea.  The Navy does what the Navy does.  He would have preferred subs but I feel better with him on a carrier.  I hope it works out for your sailor.
Thanks everyone for all of your replies.  My sons still at BC but will graduate this week.  A few weeks ago he volunteered for subs at BC.  I had no idea they did this at BC and thought they gave them some time to decide this.  Before he went to BC he was leaning more toward the surface fleet.  I guess the guys he talked to at BC who had been on subs is what made him change his mind.
My son was leaning toward sub but ultimately changed to carrier. He initially wanted sub because of the smaller community and friendliness on a sub. However, in attack subs they hot bunk (one guy gets out of the bunk after sleeping and the next guy crawls in). And there is very little room on a sub. Ultimatrly though he changed his mind because he didnt like the idea that he could do something, howver unlikely, that would cause the sub to sink to the bottom of the ocean. At least with a carrier, another ship can rescue it !!!

Lynn, Your above post cracked me up!  :)

my son has chosen subs because he thinks he could be stationed in Hawaii!!!! fine with me, I have never been to Hawaii!
My Son is also a Nuke just graduated Power School. He is going Subs, he picked them because the food is better ha ha ... If your son is at all interested in subs he should choose it. They can go sub and if they don't like it they can go surface, however should he choose aircraft carriers, he can't go to subs. I was married to a nuke who was on both. I preferred the surface ship for communication purposes, but this was 15 years ago and things have come a long way. On a sub he will be out longer and actually under the water so the mail is less frequent, however they go into smaller and more interesting ports of call. I told my son to talk to his superiors and get as much information as he can from them then follow his heart. It's his career so he has to be happy. I have a second son also in the Nuke program, who is currently in boot camp, he has already decided on Aircraft Carriers. He has no desire to be under water. It takes a special mind set to want to be on a sub. I hated when my husband was on the sub. Always made me nervous, he loved it. I think really is just a personal choice, his commanders will give him lots of information on life aboard both types of vessels. My brother and my cousin were both stationed on the same carrier and didn't know it! they are massive, but beautiful ships!! You'll love the family day cruises!! Hope he has good luck with his decision!! When does he graduate boot?

Hi rfunny,

My son graduated from BC the end of May and  is down in SC now.  He starts A school tomorrow.  Before he left for BC he was leaning toward carriers but he changed his mind during BC after talking to different people.   He signed up for subs during BC so I hope he enjoys it.  I hope your son enjoys it and I glad to hear your husband did too.

Jo1,

What did your son do between boot camp and starting A school? My son is in boot camp now and is to graduate July 29th.

Hi ProudMama,

They give the sailors  odd jobs to do until they start school.  My sons group was responsible for cleaning one building and that's what they did for 3-4 hours a day and then the rest was free time.  They also had PT every morning and they have to keep their rooms clean for inspections.  It was a nice down time after boot camp.  He's now in A school and has been very busy.  I wish your son luck and hope everything goes fine for him.

Thanks for the information.  The reason I was asking is that our older son is getting married the day after Brian graduates from boot camp and he was to be the bestman in the wedding, but we don't know if he will be able to be at the wedding.  We are driving from PA to VA (where the wedding is being held), then taking a flight to Great Lakes for the Meet and Greet and graduation.  We have a flight back to VA scheduled for 1:10 PM after graduation for the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.
Thanks for your reply.  I figured that it was not possible.

Proudmom,

Lemonelephant is correct that your son won't be allowed to go that far.  I think there is a 50 mile limit for the liberty they get after graduation plus they have to be back early in the evening.

Your going to have one busy weekend!  :)
