Our Son has tried to go into the Navy for about a year now. He is 23 years old and weights 217, has lost 45 pounds in 8 months. We live in a small town and the recruiters here where not nice to to them. They ask if he was Officer materiel and told him he was over weight. He left upset. I know he will need a BMIW because he works at Sams Club in tire and battery. He is big bone like my Uncle. Not sure where to go now we live 2 hours from the a big city. The other thing about this recruiter he keep looking at a blackberry I think that is what you call it. Can any one give me advice of what to do. His Dad is retired Air Force. Chris is a Eagle Scout and has 4 years AFJRROTC also. Thanks for listening I'm lost to what I need to do to help him move on in life.

You never said how tall he is. However, to even be eligible, the minimum he would have to be for that weight is 6 ft, 4 in. Any less than that, he is not be eligible. This is why the recruiters are probably not talking to him other than to say, "Come back when you get to xxx lbs."

Per the Officer stuff, what college degree does he have now, and what is it in? Unlike the old days when they would take anyone with a BA or BS degree, now they want to know what the degree is in. They can be really picky now since the Navy is so overmanned because of our sucky economy. You can find officer recruiter here, just scroll down and enter your zip code.

Lastly, if they do let him join, he will be able to enter as an E3 since he has his scouting and AFJRROTC items. Go here to read the rules. 030702. CRITERIA FOR ADVANCED PAYGRADE, Para 2e and 2f

He's still has a way to go. The max for 5' 8" is 181 lbs. They will probably require him to be 170 so they can be sure he doesn't gain it back. Tell him to keep at it... I have seen alot of soon to be deppers in the same position, and they just keep working at it.
The education will not get him into the officer program. He needs to have an Engineering degree, Computer Information system, or something equivalent to get into officer program. So while he continues loosing weight, have him start taking classes for these higher degree levels. If he doesn't want to do that, he can always go enlisted, then later on in his career go Warrant Officer (WO), or Limited Duty Officer (LDO). All enlisted sailors have great pride for WO and LDO because they both served as enlisted members and know what it's like.
Have him do research of Admiral Boorda. He was the only enlisted sailor ever to make it all the way Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) which is the highest position in the Navy. His story is both exciting and totally sad. Truly a remarkable man....
