When does the recruit find out what day and time they will depart?

I know this info is probably already somewhere on this site, and I have read a ton and maybe overlooked it.  I am nearly certain that my son will be flying out to Pensacola after graduation, but I am wondering when he will know *when* he'll fly out.  I want to book round trip travel, and I would like to leave the same day he does....or the day after.  I don't want to stay till Sunday if he is gone Friday night or Saturday.  When are the recruits given this info?  Thanks in advance!

I am wondering the same thing..my recruit also goes to Pensacola after grad and I'm not SURE.. but I think the letter said ..that only the SR knows and we just have to ask him...???
I'm in the same boat guys....my boy too is also going to Pensacola after boot camp. Everything I have been reading is that most leave on Saturday, but some not till Sunday. The SR's should know within a couple weeks of graduation, I have heard it's subject to change. One mom said her son was supposed to leave on early Sat morning and he got changed to Sunday, so she was glad she had booked until sunday. also heard that there is only one bus taking sailors to the airport on each day and it leaves between 1-2am, even though their flight may not take off until later that day. But apparently the Chicago airports allow the sailors to get gate passes for their family, so we could spend time with them at the airport until they leave....not ideal, but better than nothing. this is just another hurry up and wait situation.
LOL  I think we read the same info about when they leave- or don't  ha!   I see what they say about hurry up and wait..and then things can change.  I just booked the hotel for Thurs and Fri night and then I figured if he stays till Sunday..surely we can book another night SOMEWHERE...or we can sleep in the car!!  ha!  good luck and best wishes to everyone!

Hi Ladies....

My daugheter just PIR'd last Friday 7/15.  I will tellyou that Friday was a whirlwind...but one that I would not change for ANYTHING.

The SR's will get their information after Battlestations and will be most likely not be able to share that with you until Friday.  They can go back to their compartments to get things after graduation, but my daughter just wanted to leave.  She wrote her flight info on a VERY small peice of paper and tucked it away.

The recruits left for the bus to the airport at 3 am.  We were right behind them and her plane was leaving from O'hare at 7am.  We were able to wait with her, have coffee and even had gate passes to go to the gate with her but time ran out.  This is the only place and time that you can get their cell phones and computers to them...the infamous BLACK BAG.  We were also able to help another Sailor who's family could not make it to the airport and took his black bag to him also.  We were at the airport around 4 and left at 6:30am.  It only cost $4 to park....if you are in anyway able to meet them at the airport I highly recommend it.

She is safely in VA now...and I am already planning to go down this weekend to visit her!!!

Good luck to you all and you soon to be Sailors....I am not the expert but will gladly share my experience or any information that I have or know where to get with you.

Thank you so much for the info.  My SR graduates 7/22/11 and I was debating about the cell and laptop.  He is going to Pensacola and we live in Tampa!  So we are planning to visit him there.  We definitely will arrange to meet up with him at the base as they leave for the airport. When we spoke on Saturday he did not know yet if he left Sat or Sun.
