Please post advice on why your sailor chose subs or carriers.

My son is in boot camp now but he couldn't make up his mind on carrier or sub duty.  He's going to be a Nuke so those are his only two choices.  What were the reasons that made your sailor choice sub or carrier duty?

That is a shame that the wedding is the same weekend of the graduation because he might have been able to get Boot Leave once he got to School. What weekend is he graduating? My son graduates July 22nd. My other son is already down in SC just graduated Power School June 17th.

My son is graduating the weekend after your son, July 29th.  His scores were good enough for the Nuke program, but he is too old.  He is 27 and I think he said that the cut off is 25.  His next choice is submarines.

He thought that when he graduated boot camp that he wouldn't be a recruit any longer and may be able to get a leave for the wedding.

Thank you lemonelephant for all the information.
My son left for boot camp this afternoon and he is going Subs and it was mainly because of the pay, plus his grandfather wasa retired submariner.
I think this is a great question!
My son is going into subs to work on sonar equipment.  At first he thought he wanted to go into EOD.  He qualified for both but after researching it he decided on subs because it seems like a really close group.  Also, while researching both he decided that it looked like he would have more career options after he gets out.  He is, at least as of right now, planning on staying in for the full 20 yrs.
On my personal page is a blog post about the differences between the two... it might be helpful.  Hugs, k.
