What to expect during and after basic.

My daughter left Monday August 15 for basic, I am so lost do not know when I will hear from her, or when she will graduate.   She called at midnight to tell me she had made it and I would here from someone in a couple weeks.  I got her box on thursday with her clothes and things, now what happens?

My son also left the 15th. I rec'd his box Thurs. He told me when he called at midnight that night that he may get to call in 2-3 weeks. Her recruiter will have her address this Monday and just start writing. They get their mail on Sundays and that is when they get to also write us and mail out to us. My son has a new nephew that was born on Aug 17th...so I have printed pictures to send to him!!!

Dear Kris,

 

My daughter left for boot camp on July 6, 2011.  I was prepared for her box to return, however I was not prepared for how emotional I was going to be when it arrived!  My daughter has always been very independant and acted like she was all grown up.  She is now calling me "Mommy" in all of her letters (She hasn't called me Mommy since she was 6!).  Be prepared that you will get letters form your daughter about 2 1/2 weeks after she is there.  I always date all the letters I write her, because they sometimes hold the recruits mail and she may not understand why we are not writing her.  My daughter has only been able to call me once since her arrival at boot camp.  She is set to graduate on September 1, 2011.  She has told me that even if she is unable to write back, she really looks forward to "mail-call".  We have really became closer by writing letters to each other.  Just write your daughter alot with positive statements.  My daughter likes it when I send her little cards of encouragement.  And my other three children write her funny letters (My sixteen year old son wrote my daughter an entire letter on "post-it" notes!). 

It will be difficult to be away from your daughter, (Take it from a Mom who has been going through it for nearly two months.) but she will make your heart swell up with a pride and love that you never thought was possible.

Thanks !!!  your note made me feel so much better I went through the same emotions !!  I am so glad to be able to write to her and looking forward to when she can write back,  I thought that she would get to call maybe once a week but I guess not :(  Thanks again for your help and support !!  Best of Luck to you and your daughter !!!! I heard from my daughter today by phone!!  She told me she is okay and will see me at Graduation.  I was at work and missed her first call on my cell, she called me again a few minutes later and we got to talk.  We didn't have much time because she had made a couple of calls.  But I was so relieved to hear something.  One more week!      Dusty

Hi Kris,

My son left on July 27 for basic, he is beginning his 3rd week as of yesterday.  After his first initial call letting us know he made safely, he just called this past Friday, Aug 19th which put it right at 3 weeks.  He called around 6 pm our time (eastern time) it was 5 p.m. there.  So arouond the end of the second full week I would keep your cell phone (if that is what she will call you on) close by everywhere you go so you won't miss her call. I also received my first letter from him on this day also.  He said he did not have alot of time to write, the first week was tough, but it has gotten better.  He also said he probably would not be able to call again until around his 7th week. You should be receiving a letter soon, if not already, from her with information that will have her graduation date and other info.  Hope this helps.
