Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hi Dawn, most likely yes - graduations are every Friday, so while recruits tend to leave in "clumps" - those leaving within one week, will all graduate on the same Friday. Also - the date they "report to MEPS" is the day they officialy start, and some are whisked away immediately to Chicago, and some have a day or two delay depending on travel issues and other things that are only known to the military =) So for all the recruits leaving sometime in October, they will likely graduate in 4 groups, some time in December. (one more exception - because of the holiday shut down, sometimes the last to leave in October end up graduating the first Friday in January)
Congratulations to your son, and I'm glad you found N4M!! You're absolutely correct, having some time to get used to the idea really helps.

Hello Peggy--my son left for BC two years ago October--still hard to believe!! While reading all the October BC posts--brings back all of those feelings--still makes me cry!! He also went into the Nuke program and just graduated Prototype (the last school) in August and was chosen to remain as staff. He will be staff/instructor for two years in Charleston. I love visiting and do quite often--beautiful place! Good luck and God Bless

Peggy, I know what you mean by wanting to spend this last week with your son. Mine has been keeping himself busy, last visits with friends and stuff. Your son can bring all of his stuff in a travel bag, the bag will then be sent home in the box. I don't think he will be able to keep a whole box of band-aids though, I would just stick some in his wallet and he should be fine. I've read in a few of your posts how uncommunicative he's been, and truly feel for you. We've been lucky enough to meet our son's recruiter, he enlisted at 17 though, so we had to. I hope your son opens up more once he's at boot camp and sends you some letters. Maybe he will be able to express his feelings better on paper, rather than face to face. Hang in there! We're in this together and are here to support you!

Hi Peggy - blisters unfortunatley can be something worth worrying about - but for your sailor, not for you =) I didn't even know until BC was over how close my son was to being moved back a week because of a bad one - just remind your sailor to immediately take care of it if something happens - they're required to be on their feet a LOT and if anything prevents them from walking, they only get so many "take it slow" days to accomodate. I remember telling my son to start walking in boots the month before he left, but I don't think he did =)

Hi Peggy - you can't start writing yet. (or you can start writing the letters and get a queue going, but you can't mail them yet).
The first piece of mail you will get from your sailor (~ a week after he arrives) will be a form letter and he will fill out his ship / division number - this is the important information to get your letters to him. As soon as you get the ship/division, you can mail your letters. SOMETIMES if you bug your recruiter (and your recruiter is on the ball) your recruiter can actually give you this information before you get the form letter from your sailor - wait about 2-3 days after your sailor leaves, and then call the recruiter.
The rest of the address (street, city, zip etc) - that's common for all Boot Camp letters, and I know it's posted somewhere on this group but it might be faster to look at the big Boot Camp Mom's group because it's probably posted at the very top under an FAQ of some sort.

My son also leaves on Oct. 4th. He goes to MEPS on the 3rd and will fly out on the 4th. I am hoping I get the "I'm here" call at a decent time, I really don't want to miss it. Are any of you bringing your future sailors to MEPS and going to the swearing in? I want to, my son wants us to, but my husband thinks we should have his recruiter pick him up and say our goodbyes at home.

Hi - I didn't get to go to MEPs either, we dropped him at the recruiter's office. I didn't even know I could have gone until it was too late (I didn't join N4M until the next day =). I know a lot of parents do go, and I do wish I could have gone. If at all possible (and esp if your son wants you there) - you should try. Is it too far away?

Hi...1st I can't believe there are only 11days till our recruits will be leaving!!!
I do plan on going to see his swearing in. It will just be my other son (who is a deper) and I going. We do plan on dropping him off at the recruiters office and meet him at MEPS. Not sure if were going up the night befor (like my son) or getting up early and driving??
I have read that it is really special to see their swearing in befor they actually head out!!
Were in a suberb outside of Detroit, MI so not to far from the Great Lakes boot camp.
During his last two weeks as a "free" man I have been making his fav foods, stocked up on his fav snacks etc...he deserves it....although his little sisters think they deserve special treats too LOL
We all have to keep in touch and see if any of our boys grad together!!!!

Oh that's great that you're so close - you know, I don't want to get your hopes up but there's a good chance that they'll be able to get liberty for Thanksgiving. It all depends on how far through BC they are that weekend - but since your son is leaving October 4, he should be good (mine was October 10 and he was able to leave base for Thanksgiving). They do a program where you can get "adopted" by a family or a group - or if your family is close, they can sign you out for the day. My brother drove up from Indiana so that my son could get out for Thankgiving. Keep your fingers crossed =)
