Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Dawn in MI, I am so sorry. That is the worst timing. Did your son find out before he shipped out?
I too am waiting for the call. What you said makes perfect sense to me! The sadness is coming in waves for me, but the proud is always there! Hang in there. We must focus on the positive.

No and I am not going to tell him just yet... he wouldn't be upset, not a great relationship with there father (our 3 sons) there dad is an alcoholic, so he has been in and out of our lives for the past year. He has always supported us but now he said he is DONE. Timing is his specialty.
Gosh I hope that calls comes soon.. he was so nervouse when we left, he was just getting ready to board the bus to catch the plane....hugs to us all

Thanks, I'm sure you'll get yours soon too. Be prepared though..it is as quick as all the moms have said. He pretty much recited I'm here, will get to call again in about 3 wks and will be able to write sooner...gotta go

I got my call too ...about 10:46pm last night, same info and my call was only 23 sec! He sounded so nervouse and I could here the man in the background yelling to hurry up...I cried some today talking to someone about him leaving and my daughter posted on her FB page that I have been crying so some of my friends have called to see if I was ok! ughhh I cant wait to get his address to find out where to write to him!

Hi Dawn... My son was a delayed entry too and at first he was going to be a medic also but changes to a machinist on a sub. Even though I have known that this day would come since February its still one of the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I miss him so much.. One of the things I miss the most is my good night hugs but it is getting a little better... The mothers at are on here are so great.. Having their support and knowing someone else is going through the same thing helps a lot.

Good evening all new October Moms--
I just finished reading all the postings on this discussion, and it sent me back to October 5, 2009, when my son left for MEPs, then flew to Great Lakes. I recieved the wonderful, awful short call at midnight, Calif Time. I know and understand what you all are feeling. Please don't hestitate to post on here, it reallty helped me through those weeks at boot camp. The only advice I have, is to start writing now, and number each letter, so your recruit can read them in order. Mail them as soon as you get his new address. Do not expect to hear from your sailor for about 3 three weeks, for mail or phone calls. Some of us 2009 moms, didn't hear a word for four weeks, I was one of those. The recruits usually get to write home on Sunday afternoons, so when you get your letters, read and read them and hug them, just try not to spill those tears on the letters, the stains are there for good, I know, I have a couple of speckled letters still. Welcome to this crazy Navy life.

I remember the day my son told me he was "thinking" about it and when he said that I knew his mind was made up and he was just getting me used to the idea! LOL bless his heart!
But then his brother decided to join up too, which I was shocked about. He was conintuing his education to get a bachleors degree!!! He wanted to be a Navy Seal but was about 4 points shy of it on the ASVAB. So he is going to be a special warfare/special ops rescue swimmer attached to a copter! I am incredibly proud but still can't believe he joined too. He is suppose to leave in Feb of 2012 but his recruiter is trying to getting him an earlier ship date. He almost got to leave with his brother which would of been great for them but to much for me, LOL God bless em!
I know what you mean about that sound in their voice I hear it too...it will get better...we will lean on each other and Lord willing get to meet at graduation...are you planning on attending?

Kathylyn, <big hugs> I'm so sorry - I do understand. My sailor sounded the same way on my "I'm here" call two years ago yesterday, and I still remember the way he sounded. It was partly just exhaustion, probably a little bit of "what the heck have I signed up for" panic, but it really will get better. Sometimes exhaustion is actually a good thing - your son is going to be so tired and so busy over the next few days that he won't really have time to be sad or have regrets. By the time things settle down a little bit and he lifts his head up, he will be in the rythm of boot camp and navy life, and he'll be surprised that it's not so bad.I also understand about your worry about missing the call - I actually bought a cellphone clipy thing just for bootcamp so I could always have it with me. For those times when you can't have your phone with you, maybe you can leave your phone with someone? Definitely tell your patients, I'm sure they'll understand =). Oh, and keep checking the N4M boards as you get closer to that 3 week date, because the calls tend to come in groups. Especially after you find out his division and meet up with other moms in that division, sometimes you can get a heads up of when a call might happen.I think I mentioned on one of the other discussions - just keep your eye on the next "thing" that happens, don't spend too much time worrying about the whole boot camp thing. For example, the next thing is getting your letter with his division information (and you get to see his handwriting) and mailing your first letter to him. After that's in the mail, start thinking about expecting your "kid in the box" box. After the box arrives, then start thinking about the next thing (probably receiving your first letter from him), and then the call, etc.Hope this helps, we're here for you - you're not alone!

My son left on the Oct. 3rd, 2011 he to signed on as a corpsmen. He was told that he was the only one in the group that was listed as a corpsmen going to GL and his job was secure. I hope that is right. I am still learning all this and don't understand everything yet.

Cubmom my son left the 4th as a corpsmen and i am sure it is a secure spot. He goes to Aschool in Texas when bootcamp is done!
Kathylyn444 not sure on the graduation part. I am trying to figure it out myself. Does anyone know when they are told for sure when there PIR date is? I believe (according to my rough estimate) it will be Dec 2?? Possible?
I think my son said the first week is processing, getting there shots, dental work (if needed, my son needed)
Anyone else have any ideas?

If I remember correctly, you should get the official PIR date / invitation in a few weeks - but I think it's possible that the first week of October's sailors actually PIR the Wed before Thanksgiving. So it's either then or Dec 2nd. Someone posted a link (see the main group discussion) for a PIR of Nov 23 group, you might want to check them out and see when their sailors left.
Processing can take anywhere from 3 days to 10 days (but I think 5 is probably usual) . Oh - and don't forget that your recruiter may get the information before you do, so give it 2 or 3 days and then start calling your recruiter, s/he might be able to give you the ship/division info (the address) and PIR date. Once you get the ship/division info, find a discussion for other moms in that ship/division - and if one person confirms what the PIR date is, you're all PIR'ing the same time.

I just got my box ladies, havn't even opened yet.... for fear I will cry again and I just did my makeup cuase I have to take my 8yold daughter to doctors (thinking it might be strep, yuck)
