I need help with organizing my trip to Yokosuka, Japan to visit my son in March/April for 2 weeks.

Basically, I need to know everything, I will be flying out from Ft Lauderdale, FL mostly likely thru LAX to Tokyo. Please advise on how to get to Yokosuka which way is the best way NAVY Shuttle bus or taking a train, prices for both choices and time travel, which hotels you recommend and since I am making such a long journey I would like to see the rest of Japan's attactions. Perhaps there is tour company in Yokosuka that offers sighseeing tours across Japan, for ex. I would like to see Tokyo, Mt Fuji, Kyoto, etc. My son just moved there 2 months ago so he doesn'y have any info for my questions.

Please help with these arrangements, I would like to start putting my trip together ASAP.

Can't wait to see my baby. Love him and miss him so much.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

The Mt Fuji climbing season is very short, just a couple months in late summer.  The rest of the year you take a tour of the Hakone area and look at it.
Thank you, your info helps
lindav: My son went to Yokosuka beginning of Oct. He will be there 3 yrs. His g/f and I would like to someday visit him. I enjoy reading the posts from mom's that have been there and am anxious to hear about your plans and the trip. You must be so excited!! This is a wonderful site, everyone is very helpful. It was my lifeline during bootcamp. Would you please keep me posted on your future adventure?  God Bless you and your son!  Hugs!

Thank you so much for your warm wishes. I do look forward seeing my son, I am so proud of him and of all of our children who are serving our country. I also look forward exploring some of the sights since I love to travel it all sounds very exciting although its a very long journey from US to that part of the world but its worth it.

I will post my itenarary as soon as I will put together and ofcoarse I will also post my visit there as well.

I was there the same time Katlanta was. The hotel we stayed at was nice.. small but nice.  AS for getting to the base on the shuttle.. your son needs to make those arrangements and he has to be with you to ride the shuttle.   I agree with Kat... get some ideas of what you would like to do. Definitely Tokyo and the Meiji Shrine.. it will be BEAUTIFUL that time of year. Everything is safe really.  AS already stated.. MWR has trips you can look into.  I lived there 20+ years ago so it was so fun "returning"... very expensive tho.  I exchanged my money here and watched the market to see the best rate of exchange.  Have fun!

Can I book trips from MWR myself or it has to be done only by navy personnel. If I can do it myself, do I need to book tours in advance of when I arrive their. Did anyone used their tours?  The reson I am asking these questions because I don't know if I should use MWR or go for escorted tours when I will be heading back to Tokyo after visitng my son in Yokosuko?

Maybe there are other tour companies in Yokosuko besides MWR.

Unless you are an authorized patron (i.e. with a military i.d. card) I don't believe you can book the MWR trips.  We didn't go on any MWR trips.  My daughter knew how to get where we wanted to go so we were on our own.  I do not know what might be available in terms of tours offered by the local economy.

Yes, you have to have an ID card to book those, so your sailor has to be able to have the time off to go also.

Actually, it is rather simple to get around to most of the places you'd like to see on your own with a good guide book.  Fleet and Family Services has handouts with maps to most of the places. Hakone would require wheels to get the best views.  We always took the Harley up there.  Kamakura (Hase) where the Great Buddha is, is a very short and simple train ride.  Tokyo is large and sprawling, easier to pick a certain attraction (Akasuka for example) and do a DIY day trip by train.

The trouble with bus tours is the traffic.  It can take over four hours to go 50 miles.  Trains are your friends!

I never used an offbase tour package, except the one time my house-owner took me along on a bus tour sponsored by her husband's company.  I have little idea what we saw, it was all in Japanese.  No one spoke English!   There was a lot of singing, and beer, a terrific lunch, and a loooong afternoon at a winery.  Great fun though.
