Hello everyone,  What a great site this is and I'm sure it will help me.  My son is transitioning into a new life and I am transitioning into a life without him in my every day life(physically) :(  .  My son, Nico, left for Boot Camp on Sept. 7th from MEPS in Baltimore, MD and has a graduation date of November 4th.  I am so proud, happy, excited for him yet there's still that little twinge of sadness, nervousness and concern for him as he embarks on this new life and begins building his future on his own.  I know how some parents cannot wait until their child is 18 or so and out of the house but I have to admit, I wouldn't have minded if he stayed just a tad longer LOL  He is my first born and we are very close. I also have an 11 year old son.  I was an army brat, Mom, Dad, and Sister were all in the Army. I currently live in Southern Maryland.

He's already written a few times and called once(other than the initial call home).  He said his group got in trouble and missed their first opportunity to call home.  So I first spoke to him this past Saturday.  He said it isn't that bad and has passed his swimming tests, survived hell week, and needs to pass 2 more of the written tests.  That, he says, is a challenge because finding time to study or the concentration and focus needed after their workouts, makes it difficult.  But all in all, he's always sounded upbeat and positive which makes it a lot easier on me.

I'm flying out to Chicago O'Hare on the 3rd.  My questions , if anyone can give some advice/suggestions:

I read that was the closest airport but if not, please let me know.

Which hotels are the closest to the base?

Will they get to be with us all weekend? (I'm waiting on the recruiter to call me back) I don't want to stay all weekend if all I get is graduation Friday with him.

What would I be able to bring him (Iphone, laptop, clothes, shoes, phone card)?

I look forward to getting to know everyone else going through the same things and all the "Vet" Navy Mom's who know the ropes and can help other newbies like myself.

Thanks so much,

Yolanda (Nico's Mom) :)

Welcome, here are some groups that will help you.  Join the group, PIR 11/04/11 TG 51 8 DIVISIONS (361-366, 822, 951), to connect with others with loved ones who are training with your SR.  Join New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages and Discussions there.  Two other groups you may wish to check out are Boot Camp Mom's and PIR Reference Information

Your questions will pretty much be answered in those groups.  If your son will be staying in GL for A School, you will have daytime Liberty with him all weekend.  It will take 3-5 hours for him to check in across the street and then he will call you to pick him up and you will have him until evening when he has to be back, but you can check him out the next two days as well.  If he flies out to A School you will have him as soon as Liberty is called on Friday until he has to be back that evening.  He will most likely fly out Saturday, but you can meet him at the airport and spedn time with him until his flight.  They all get dropped off at the ariport in the wee hours of the morning regardless of when their flights are, so some may be at the airport all day.  We suggest that you plan to leave on Monday or late Sunday if your Sailor will be staying in GL and Sunday if your Sailor will be flying out. You can take the things you mentioned to him after he checks in at A School at GL or at the airport.  They cannot take those things back to the RTC.  Remember those things need to be able to fit in a backpack (he will have one) for carry-on.

Thank you so much. You did help answer some of my questions.  He is staying in GL for A School so I'll plan to leave late Sunday.

He is Ship 11 DIV 362 so thanks for those links. I will definitely check them out as well.

Yolanda
