OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Holiday leave
I've read somewhere that the sailors earn 2 1/2 days leave for every month they have served. Does anyone know how this affects the upcoming holiday leave? I've read the base is pretty much shut down between 12/18 to 1/2 so, do they get this entire time off, or does it depend on how many days they've been on base? Also, does boot camp count as their days accrued?
I'm just trying to get an idea of how many days off he might have and looking into buying airline tickets.
Also, does anyone know if the airlines offers any sort of discounted rate for the military? Is there any way to book a flight there in camp or does it not make any difference if I do it for him?

I think that amount of leave sounds about right, but I'm not positive. And BC does count. There are people there at A School that will help your son book his ticket and they were very helpful to my son last year when he was there. THey will help him find the discounts, and figure out the details about getting to & from the airport. There are shuttles from the base during the busiest times, and even a cab ride can usually be shared by a couple of sailors who will be leaving around the same time so the price isn't too bad. My son didn't take the whole 2 weeks, he chose to take a week at Christmas & was back by new year's. It's very quiet there, not too much going on but quite a few of the sailors did that, so it's up to your son how much time he has accrued or wants to take. Good luck, it's all very confusing but you'll get it figured out sooner or later! And it will always be somewhat confusing, so get used to it!

My son came home for the entire 2 weeks. During Christmas Standdown they can all take the time even those just coming out of boot camp. They will pay it back when they return. Boot camp does count. My son PIR'd on Dec. 4th 2009 and came home for the 2 weeks of standdown. It's their choice to use all that time but the base is closed down and only one barracks is open. If he stays for any of that time he will have to stay in that one barracks. My son flew back on a Sat night and the barracks didn't open until after noon on Sunday so he got a hotel room in Chicago and took the train in to the base on Sunday.

My son wants to come home for 2 weeks. He is looking into ride sharing home to VA or flying. Also, he has told me they have to bring all or their belongings home or I guess find a storage unit. They cannot leave their stuff there! Does anyone know about this?

@zacksmom, if I remember correctly, what they can't bring or don't need is left in one building and locked until base is reopened. my son did bring his 2 seabags as he brought home books and other heavy stuff that he didn't want to carry when he moved on to C school. also, if I remember correctly, sailors also had to store their bedding with their belongings. ride sharing might be difficult, as sailors are not allowed to have cars/trucks on base, unless they are married and live off base. if your son does decide to fly, they have to purchase tickets for the bus ride or take a taxi. there are many personnel on base and at the airport to help them get to where they need to go.

The base does run shuttles to the airports, the sailors do need to sign up, and there is a small fee.
For those of you making travel plans for your sailors:
It is important when booking flights to remember there are hundreds (if not thousands) of students checking out all at once. There are room inspections before they can pick up their leave papers. It isn't getting up in the morning and hopping a cab, there is a procedure which takes time. This means do NOT book the earliest morning flights.
Winter in the area is dicey for air travel, NEVER book the last flights to Chicago. Give your sailor some wiggle room, preferably getting them there a day early. You may want to be greedy and have that extra day with them, and they may not think anything of timing it close, but take it from experienced sailors: better to be a day early then ten seconds late.

Do not book a flight before 10am the day they start leave or they will NOT make the flight! They (the Sailors in "A" School, have been told this over and over!)
As far as how much leave they can take, they can ONLY go 5 days in the hole...so if they don't have enough time, they can not take the whole amout of time.
As far as getting tickets if they are on the "A" School side, it has been put out over and over to them (already) where they can go to buy tickets...if they didn't pay attention to detail, they can ask the staff and they will let them know.
As far as discounted military rates, NEVER ask for the discount first if you call for a ticket...get the price first than ask for the discount....most airlines do not give out discounts over the holidays.
If someone is in bootcamp and will be PIR on the dates RTC has said can go on leave, those people need to check out the RTC FB page to stay up to date on the info.
