Well first of all slow down first he has to get through boot and A school training in San Antonio then he would get his assignment.  You could be apart for 6mos or in some cases longer depends on the need of the Navy and where he gets assigned.  Just take it slow.

i really appreciate the answers. im just super nervous about this. my brother is in the navy too but he's doing security. i just want to go into this with at least some understanding

Ashley - I picked up a couple things with your post...

It sounds like you are scared of him being in a combat zone.  Rightfully so.  I know alot of moms are truly scared for their sailors.  But lets talk about the true facts, instead of the unknowns.

As some of you know, I'm the group admin for the Cryptology area here at N4M's.  We had a mom who's son was about to deploy to Afghanistan and she was worried.  I explained my way of thinking and now she is totally fearless.  This is what I wrote:

xxxxxx - In todays age, I wouldn't be scared at all.  Heck our police get shot at more than our military.  I'd much rather be in Afganistan as a CT, than walking through the ghetto in my own country (the U.S.)

What people fail to realize is that when they show the # of military that have died in the middle east, it includes people that died in car accidents and other weird stuff (ie suicides).  You have more chances of getting wacked here in the U.S. just by driving a car down the street.  Everyone still has that WW2 stuff in their heads where we lost thousands per day.  But lets look at the true numbers in our generation.  It's 1850 people since 2001.  That to me is incredible. Heck, we're at war! 1850 people in 10 year of war is not that much.  It's just that the news plays it up.

I truly hate talking about deaths, especially to a bunch of moms and spouses.  But people just need to know the facts.   10 years of war (1850 people) doesn't even add up to the single day of the World Trade Center killings (2996 people).   We can walk around scared or we can live our lifes.  To me, I would be honored for my son to spearhead our military in the middle east.  When you look at the numbers, it shows that he's not in harms way.

Just my view.....of course, I'm not a mom either....

Hey! My wonderful boyfriend just left for Basic Training on the 14th and he'll be an HM as well. I have the same fears and I am also new to this game even though I'm an Army Brat! My man called me before he got on the plane and told me that after basic he'd immediately be headed to San Antonio and we're both praying that he get stationed in San Diego, CA!!! You should add me as a friend and we can be buddies on here and I'll let you know how my journey is going! I wish you all the best! God Bless you and your future sailor!!! And congrats on the new baby!! :)
