OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Did you forget to ask the recruiter a question and it came back to bite you?

The recruiter wants to finalize everything and take my son to MEPS on Tuesday.  He is a senior in high school and already 18.  He did JROTC and I understand that will take him to an E2.  Other than that, I feel like a novice since the last Navy person in our family was in WWII.  Any advice on questions to ask would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Welcome Oceanbey, I believe JROTC should take him to E3, you might double check that.

Here is the rules -

e.  Junior ROTC Program.  Applicants who are accepted for enlistment, and who provide evidence of successful completion of two years of any Junior ROTC Program are entitled to enlist in paygrade E2.  Those applicants who have been awarded certificate of successful completion of three years of any Junior ROTC Program, under any military department, are entitled to be enlisted in paygrade E-3 upon presentation of the completion certificate or high school transcripts showing successful completion.

Thanks all.  Could you explain to me what types of things need to be in writing on the contract?  Rank?  money?  dates?  DEP details? 

All except DEP details maybe. My daughter is going Nuke. We made sure her enlistment bonus was in there. Her recruiter was really good about explaining it all. And her father, being prior service, made sure she knew what to look for.

Thanks Blackie123!  Unfortunately our recruiter had to go out of town and we missed our meeting!  I hope we get to sit down with him before he takes my son to MEPS and sign his contract!  Like I said...I'm a complete rookie at all of this.  I appreciate your advice.

 

Rememeber that what ever is in the contract is what they get.  The date they leave for bootcamp, the job they are getting, bonuses (if any, most are gone now), paygrade going in as (E1-E3), how many years active and how many years reserve. 

Thanks Angie!  I am printing your email and handing it to my son as I type this.  I hope he pays attention when he signs his name!  At this time, he will be an E2 due to his ROTC....then, we are told he can get up to an E3 with the DEP.  Does that have to be spelled out too?

Absolutely must be spelled out or it doesn't happen.  Tell him not to let them rush him.

Regarding the E3 with DEP...that is a tricky one...as some people seem to think they just get it...truth be told they need to finish all the PQS while in DEP and pass the first PFA in bootcamp, very few people pass the first one..so they don't get E3.  That means that he needs to be ready for the run, pushups, and sit ups with in days of getting to bootcamp...which most people can't handle due to lack of sleep and stress of being in bootcamp.  Also witht he people "motivating" them causes some people not to be able to do it. 

My son is in nuke school now. He did not pass his first boot camp PFA, but he graduated boot camp as an E3.

 

The nuke contract is different than the JROTC contract.  Nukes, and a few other programs, are guaranteed the E-3 in writing.  The JROTC contracts have specific requirements, such as passing the PFA.  

I didn't pass one of my PFAs in boot camp, and I came out as an E-3, by AECF contract.

Once again, I'm a rookie.  What is AECF contract?  I "fired" my recruiter yesterday after he lied, wouldn't return phone calls, was EXTREMELY late to all appointments, and was generally slack.  I have found another recruiter at another station I'll be using. (Yes , I have demanded all new enlistment paperwork so the new recruiter gets the credit for both my son and girlfriend)   I'll be there today to hear everything instead of sending "da-hubby".   It's true, the biggest obstacle to a recruiter is "da-mama".  Thanks to all who have given me advice during this time.  I don't know what I would have done without all of you and this site.
