My son is in Ship 11 Div 039, and I am going to see him for Christmas. I called a restuarant in North Chicago called Flannagans and they will be open for Christmas day and said they hope to see all the families from the Great Lakes recruit training command in for Christmas dinner. You only need reservations if more than 6 people in party. We are staying at the Red Carpet Inn.

I am also saying at the red carpet. I have never been to Chicago before so i really have no ideas as to what to do.  i call amc theater close to the hotel and it is open so i think we will be cking that out during the day.  i will ck Flannagans out.  thx....  i am so excited to see my girl.

We are also thinking of the movies that day, but will see what my son would like to do. I have never been to chicago either so we are just gonna wing it lol. And I am sooooo excited to see my son as well. Counting down the days. Are you gonna rent a car ? We fly in so late that night I hope the car rental place is still open when we get there and hope our flight is not late since I hear they aften are due to weather so I'm praying for a clear night christmas eve.

I fly in around 5,  i have a car on reserv.  i was so worried about them not having one and being all alone i just reserv. it as soon as i got my ticket.  but my flight home is at 5 am i am a little worried about driving so early in the morning with the weather.  but i will make it work.  i am also counting down the days....

I will reserve one but still worried if they will be open when I get there. I will call ahead just to make sure.

I would be careful going to Flannagans. Check with the recruiter and have him contact the RDC's (if you children are still in boot camp, but being released for a couple of hours for Christmas dinner) because when my husband was up there last year, there was a STRICT rule against going there. People were getting into trouble all the time. I'm not sure why. I'd have to ask my husband, but I remember passing the restaurant and telling him we should go there and he was emphatically saying "no."  It may be just fine now, but it's worth looking into.

I will have my husband call the visiting center to get a list of open restaurants on christmas day just in case we cannot go there. Thanks for the heads up.

How do you know if new recruits are allowed to go?  My daughter had talked about this before she left, but I didn't figure there was any way she could get to go?  Are only certain divisions allowed to go?

Only SR that PIR on Jan 6 and 13th are being allowed out Christmas Day.

I am getting my daughter for Christmas and can't wait! Got so excited when the adopt a sailor papers came and was scared to death I was going to lose them before I could get them sent off. We are from the area so are taking her and another recruit for the day. Can't wait, so excited to see her again.

Hello everyone, My son is in ship 7 Div 35 and I am going to see him for chirstmas as well. I will be arriving in Chicago Midway on Saturday sometime about 4pm and will take a taxi to Residence Inn Gurnee. My son said he wanted to stay off base so I decided against the Navy Lodge. I am planning to rent a car so hopefully the weather stays mild for all of us. It has been over 24 years since I was based in Great Lakes so I am not sure I will remember directions and so forth.

The Navy lodge isn't on base.
