I am confused about the whole issue of graduation.  My sons leave date was 12/06/11.

I was told that we would not find out the date until one week before.  Is that right?

How do i make travel plans with no notice?

Somebody... help!  Please...

You will be given a PIR  graduation date sooner this is the date your son should graduate if he completes all his training. so you do have an idea of when but and again but until you get the call that says "I'm a sailor" it is not official.

You will get a form letter, usually within the first 2 weeks after he left, that will tell you his PIR date.  You can then begin making plans.  It appears that Southwest Airlines has the best policy if you have to cancel/change your flight information if something happens to cause a change in his PIR date.  Sometime in his last week there, you will get the "I'm a Sailor" call and will know that he made it through.  You may be able get his address from his recruiter and this may also allow you to know the PIR date based on the Division number.  Join the following groups, or at least look at the information within them, to get more information and support:  New Members Stop HereBoot Camp Mom's, and/or PIR Reference Information.  Once you know his Division number and/or PIR date, go to GROUPS: Listed By PIR Date thru Feb 3, 2012 (Pass In Review, ie Boot Camp Graduation) and join the group for his PIR date and connect with others who have loved ones training with your SR. To be honest, it's a crapshoot. You'll know the date soon of his "intended" PIR (graduation), but it is not official until the day or two before. Either make your plans where you can cancel or roll the dice your son stays on track.

Wow, that sound crazy.  I guess I will look into Airlines that will let you change your flight last minute (or week as the case may be).  Thank you all for your advice.  If anyone knows of an Airlines that is cool with this, please let me know.  Thank you!

Southwest is said to have the best policy for changes.  Once you know the date of PIR, it IS the PIR date unless sometihing happens (injury, illness, failed test...) that either sends the recruit home or delays PIR.

Sends the recruit home??  What?

Unfortunately, sometimes things happen and a recruit is unable to finish BC.  It happens.  Sometimes they go home and are able to go in later after an injury heals or a situation is corrected, and other times they are unable to reenlist.  Most, however, do complete BC either on time or within a few weeks of their original PIR date.

I sure hope so, no, make that I know so! He has a great new life ahead of him. Thanks for the information.

LOL! I'ts much easier for us to be non emotional about it, since we've already gone through it, but it can be quite a lot to take in at the time. All you can do is go with the assumption your SR will do just fine, and keep saying to yourself, "no news is good news". I'm sure he'll be just fine.

The road ahead for your sailor recruit will be quite new and exciting. For you as well.

Thank you!  That made me feel better :)

Have a great day!
