my sailor deployed last wednesday from San Diego.  I was advised to not send homemade cookies because it may take a long time to get his mail, what is anyone else doing?

My mom used to mail me cookies...she would put a peice of bread in with the cookies and they where fine when I got them.  Or you can make short bread cookies which are hard anyways.

thank you Angie, that helps alot.  I was thinking sugar cookies would be good. I had better get baking!

My Boyfriend left at the same time as your sailor.  I was not sure about sending cookies either thinking that they would get to him all yucky, but he asked for me to bake him some anyhow and said that they should get to him just fine.  I sealed them in ziplocks, took a straw and sucked the air out, and then put them in sealed plastic containers.  I hope he is right and they get to him tasting yummy still.  I sent them on Monday.  I know he diffently will not get them for xmas.  I sent a card to him the day he left San Diego 11/30/2011 and he still has not recieved it.  I am thinking it should get to him soon.  Hoping any how.  Have any of you sent anything that has gotten there yet and if so how long did it take.  I have been keeping track on my calender what I send and what day just so I know roughly how long it will take.

Glad to know someone else is out there whose sailor left the same time as mine!  Thanks for the reply!  I talked to my son yesterday and told him I had mailed him 2 boxes a week apart, the last one yesterday the 17th. He told me no one on the ship has received any mail.  I sent him a couple things that would travel ok, and I am anxious to hear what condition they will arrive in!  In other discussions people have talked about sending cookies and even banana bread and it seems to arrive ok, if it is packed properly, and a family friend asked yesterday about sending chocolate.  will it melt?? I told her to put in ziploc bag just in case!  and that way it won't ruin anything else.  I did s end some oreos hoping they would arrive ok.

Chocolate in winter does okay, but avoid it in the summer months.

I send chocolate based on uniform change that way i always knew when not to send it. if in whites no chocolate.  do remeber those messy faces from long ago lol.
