Hi Ladies! My sailor and I just got engaged about a week ago and we're trying to figure out when we can get married. Right now he's in C-School, set to graduate in April then report to his first duty station in WA. My questions is at what point do our sailors find out when their ship is set to deploy? Could it be before they even graduate school or after they report to their duty station? We're obviously going to keep our schedule flexible but I'd hate to set a wedding date and not have him there because he's out to sea. It wouldn't be the same without him. ;)

They pretty much find out once they get their orders.  However, setting a date before he checks in is risky, no telling what they'll do with him.  He certainly can't take leave right away, in fact, most of the time the "new guy" doesn't get to take leave the first year.  That isn't policy, just reality.  He has quals and such to complete.

Are you thinking he gets to come home for a wedding?  Or would you do it there?

We were hoping it can happen in Los Angeles but if it isn't possible then it isn't possible. I've learned to roll with the punches in my 29 years. :)

Which ship?  You can join the group for it and at least get a vague idea of what they're doing.  LA would be outside of his liberty limits, so even a long weekend would require permission to fly down.

I joined the group ship discussion however it's pretty quiet in there. If we HAVE to do the courthouse wedding in April that's what we'll do. A wedding would appease our familes but if it can't happen then that's fine. Our main goal is to get married and start a family. I'm finally stable enough in my career where it wouldn't be hard for me to relocate and find work. Both of my grandparents were in the Navy so I've been taught to expect the unexpected with the Navy. :)

If he has orders in hand, have him contact the ombudsman and see if you can get on the newsletter list now as a fiance.  You can't add yourself, but he may be able to do so now.  Can't hurt to ask, and you may get good info early enough to start planning things.  Also find the Family Readiness Group and see if you can be involved in that as a fiance.  You are in limbo until you are married, of course, but start lining up the support groups now if possible.

Will do! Thank you very much for the advice!

Keep in mind once he gets orders...they aren't changing soo there is a chance that if you aren't married he could get stationed overseas and you would not be able to move over there with him...even if you did end up married.

I would see if he can ask his sponsor.  They shouldn't be able to give you an exact date because of OPSEC stuff (it shouldn't be emailed, etc), but they can give you what month....

Also, what ship is it he's going to?  Because (and this isn't an OPSEC thing because the Navy has recently released a big news story about it, saying this info) the USS Lincoln is going on deployment, and part of the reason for that deployment is because it's being re-homeported in Virginia to go into drydock for a few yrs for a re-fuel.

Just figured I would mention that, just in case that's the ship he's going to, because we've seen people accept orders based on the ship's home port at the time, but they didn't know until they got there that the home port was set to change, or was only temporary because they were in the yards...

His orders are for the USS Davis. He's going to see if he can get more info when he gets back to school.

Oh wow!  Very small world!  One of my very good friends is the Ombudsman for the Rodney M. Davis.  You all are going to a pretty good ship :-)
