My daughters recruiter picks her up on the 5th (Next week) and she flies out on the 6th from San Diego CA for boot camp in Great Lakes. I'm reading how parents are going to see them swear in, we haven't heard anything about this. Is this different in every state?

I would think most MEPS are run the same. She will stay in a hotel the night of the 5th and be brought to MEPS early Tuesday morning. we were able to go to MEPS at 9am and they took the "shippers" to the airport via shuttle at about 11. I would call the recruiter.

Thank you so much for the info, I'll make a call tomorrow. I love this site, it will be most helpful!

I'm not sure if it's different in every state--I'm thinking not, because I think they all have to go through MEPS before they ship out, and all take the oath before they do.  This is the one that counts.  From that point on, their pay starts and there is no backing out.  I don't know how far you are from MEPS, but I was about 100 miles from Shreveport where my son shipped out.  I drove him to the hotel, actually booked a room in the same hotel where he was staying, went to MEPS the next morning and watched the swearing in ceremony.  I then met him at the airport and hung out with him until he went to the gate.  It is definitely worth it if you can swing it, although it was much harder on me than I thought it was going to be.   I was able to take pictures at the swearing in, and the people at MEPS were very accommodating.  They let me know when to go back, when he was in the group that was being sworn in next.  At this MEPS facility, he was sworn in with other branches--Air Force, Army, etc. not just Navy, but I have seen others post that theirs were sworn in with just Navy recruits.  I guess it all depends on how big the MEPs is or how many are being shipped out that day.  I hope this helps.

My son left on feb 16 from Los Angeles MEPS. I went to the swearing in and then went to the airport and saw him off.

If there is a MEPS near you, you are more than welcome to go and watch her swear in.  Just talk with her recruiter about it. You can ask her to talk to her recruiter about it, or call him yourself. The recruiter will give you instructions.

Normally, they have the recruits stay at a hotel the night before shipping out, and you most likely will not be able to stay there, as they have a buddy system, where all the recruits stay together.

If you don't get to go to MEPS to watch the swearing in, then you can always go to the airport and say good bye there. She will most likely be there at least 3 hours early, just waiting to fly out.

Best wishes!!!

We were able to drive to MEPS to see our son swear in. I'm thankful that we did because I had no idea he needed a phone card. We had enough time to leave and pick one up for him, within five minutes of making it back to MEPS he boarded the bus to leave for the airport.I love that we had that time together. The other recruits that didn't have their family members with them were fine too though, they were smiling and talking to each other, very excited about where they were going, exchanging stories about what their recruiters told them,etc...They were fast friends enjoying lunch together.  The girls were all sitting together. I hope that you can see her swear in but if you can't don't worry about her she will have plenty of friendly company. I'm glad you found this site before your daughter leaves,I wish I had. It has helped me SO MUCH!

I don't know if anyone has told you but best not to use last names, it looks like you are using a last name in your post.

Thank you for the info

We didn't know we would be allowed to see them be sworn in until we had been there quite awhile. They made an announcement for all the recruits to go to a certain room (something that happens alot that day) and then later they announced for the parents to go to the same room.  It was very emotional, but we were so proud and thankful we were able to see that.  This was in North Carolina.

emilysmom - my son swore in at MEPS in San Diego.  You can go.  We live in San Diego - so I dropped him off with his recruiter early in the morning and then went to MEPS a few hours later.  Once they buzz you through the front door, you go through security and then tell them at the desk why you are there.  They will tell you where to go and wait and then should come and get you for your daughter's swearing in.  Be sure that your daughter knows that you will be there because they ask the recruits who has family waiting to watch and will be sure to come and get you.  My son didn't know that I would be waiting so he didn't let them know.  It was lucky that I had been waiting awhile and noticed that they were taking other kids back for swearing in so I asked at the front desk and they rushed me back - I got there just in time - so be sure that she knows and let's them know her mom is there.  After they swore in we got to take pictures together.  After that I waited around with him for a while at MEPS, then went home and met him at the hotel after he got checked in and we went to dinner.  It's pretty much the same everyone from what I've read on here - I just wanted to give you my experience since it was in San Diego.  For sure go - it was one of the proudest moments and bittersweet moments ever.  Congratulations!!!
