My son is due back in early Oct. I have received very little information from anyone on this deployment. Yes I am on the ombudsmen list for news, updates, etc. When I finally made contact about a month ago to find out if there had been any information during the last 9 months, I was told that my email was on the crew list, not family. Anyway since then two emails. My email is set up for delivery/read acknowledgments, and they have been read. I really want to be there is time, since I was not able to be there for their last homecoming. It is at the point of no return getting a airfare at a somewhat reasonable price. Even with my job, they are willing to split the cost of the trip, as I would be able to visit two of our facilities in the area before the day they are due home and then would have a couple of days to spend with him.

Hi, There should be a "careline" you can call and hear a recorded message about upcoming info... But they wont say the arrival time for homecoming until 24 to 48 hours before it's due to arrive for security reasons. Also there should be a website for his ship, if you don't have a phone number for the careline. Check the website and you'll probably beable to find out from the posts people are writing about homecoming. But I dont think anyone will write the exact date. Again due to the security. Best thing you can do is write a post explaining you want to be at the homecoming for your son, but your not sure of the date. Then ask anyone with informatiion to contact you through your personal email address. I hope this helps... if I can be any help.. let me know :)

Michele
It is tricky trying to plan airfare for a homecoming. They will not be posting the arrival date and with various weather conditions, etc. the ship's arrival time can move in either direction.

The ombudsman is going to be your best option for solid information, do you have another email address that you can work with to register for communications?
even tho my son has been a sailor for a year now i m still looking for answers.what is the ombudsmen list.
I have talked with the ombudsmen and I know the approximate date as I have talked to her in the past. I know she works full time, I guess I was used to the prior ombudsmen, she kept everyone updated on a regular basis. She has read my emails that I have sent, just not responding to questions/concerns.

The ombudsmen list is the list they have for communicating with the sailor's family. Your sailor has to give permission and/or complete something for the ombudsmen to send you updates.

As far the ships website, this go around, nothing has been posted. All information I have been able to gleem is from the carrier of the strike group their ship is in.
Melinda, I am a former Ombudsman.I would suggest that you try to contact the ships wives club president (This might be called the spouse support group now). You can find this person's name on the ships website usually or you can call the family support center office for the base that your son is stationed out of. The club Pres,. is in charge of planning the homecoming events usually. If none of this works and you know which Group of ships your son's ship is with you can try to contact the Deseron or Squardron office in charge of your sons ship. Is he on a carrier or a smallboy or a sub?
You may also contact the Chaplain's office of that base and they may be able to help you.The family service center should be able to direct you to someone that can help you. They usually will hold a meeting for the families that are coming from out of state for the homecoming the night before the ship arrives.A meet and greet and information meeting. I hope this info helps you. Good luck!!!
Thanks for the input. I will try calling her again. I know she works full time and responds as she can. Maybe a face to face (lol) will help.

As far as his ship he is on a FFG and has been since he arrive 4 years ago.
My husband was also on an FFG. That is a small ship around 200 to 250 guys. He really liked being on the smaller ships where you got to know all of the crew. If you can't get anything from the Ombudsman try the other suggestions.
That is the same reason that he choose the FFG. He know starting out on a larger ship that he would only work at his rating. this way he was able to cross train and learn other areas. He is on the VBSS team, a fireman, for a while on the team that he call the shake & bake, something when the helos landed on the ship. It looks like right now when they return he will have orders to AW school and if that is the case, he is re-enlisting. He currently and IC. If the orders are not there when they return is planning to transfer to the Coast Guard. He had extended his enlistment through this deployment, otherwise this past July was the end of his time. He really enjoys the Navy, so I am praying that the orders come through. I will really spend more time on my knees with this.
My husband was a DS data systems, he worked with the IC's and the ET's. Our son is in A school to be an ET. I hope your son gets the school he wants. We would hate to loose him to the CG. My son is also hoping to get on a small ship. A FFG or a Destroyer.
I talked with our ombudsman and she was able to bring me up to date on everything. Now I need to work with my boss and the trip since they are willing to split the cost. YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad that you got your answers. yea!!!! Have a great time,it truly is amazing watching a ship come home from a major deployment. It is even better than PIR. Are they going to have a get together for the out of town families? They usually have a band on the pier and all kinds of things to entertain all the people waiting.
