My husband is in BC at the moment, he graduates on the 30th. I can't wait to see him! But he sent me a letter a few weeks ago saying he wants me to move down to Chicago when I come for PIR. I've made all the necessary plans to do so, but now I'm wondering if he will be able to get the live ashore package. I thought he could but its only a 3 month school. Does anyone know if OS's can live off base during Aschool??

I know he can't during the first phase.. Just not sure about after that.

I'm not 100% sure because I didn't bother moving to GL with my husband for the short amount of time he was there but I have heard that it is extremely difficult to get an approved live ashore even after the first phase. It is a whole big long packet of paper work and once he fills it out then he has to wait to get it approved which could take weeks or months in itself.

Does HE know about liberty phases and the live ashore packet?  We do, because it is discussed daily here.  Recruits don't have a clue about any of that.  Inform him. and see how he feels.

For three months, and he can't move offbase right away?  Is the deposit on an apartment worth it?  Did you find something short term? Military lease clause? Weekly/monthly extended stay hotel may be your best bet financially.

Can you move all your stuff in one shot?  Anything you leave behind "at home" does not get moved by the Navy later. If you're in Great Lakes, you and your household goods get moved from one location only.

I found a way to have a place to live without a deposit or a lease. (thank goodness) Its an extended stay hotel and I pay per night or per week or per month.. as long as they get their money they don't seem to care. Ive booked a room for a little over three months, but I have no obligation financially to stay that long.  All of my stuff fits into two bags. I spent the last two years moving every 3 or 4 months so I learned to pack light. Anything I can't pack in the car will be left in Rochester, thats where we will have the Navy pick our stuff up from. Because that's where all of his stuff is. I'm bringing all of my things with me when I go down with my inlaws for graduation. He has no clue from what I can tell. I should get a call on Monday so I'll let him know then. And if it doesn't work I'm not signing anything that will hold me there. I'm use to making sure I have an escape plan, life is too unpredictable. He does know about liberty phases, we covered that before he left. I sent him a letter mentioning live ashore package, but I don't know the details so its quite vague. I have nothing holding me here, so I don't mind moving.  I just don't know whats going on with the live ashore package. I'm so new to all of this....

Sounds like a plan.    Just one small detail... make sure someone in Rochester has a power of attorney to sign for the household goods shipment.   Also, that could mean you pay for your own personal travel from Great Lakes to the new duty station.  Possibly.

The OS school has contact info online, you could call and ask about live ashore packets.  You might even get a helpful, pleasant answer.  Let me know if you need help digging it up.

I'm not quite sure what household goods shipments are.. The trip to Great Lakes is all taken care of :) I knew the Navy wouldn't pay for the move. I was planning on heading back as soon as hes done with Aschool. I was told he would have about a week  of leave after he graduates? And we were going to come back to Rochester to see family before we move the his duty station. I havent been able to find the OS School contact info.

Household goods is shipping your physical belongings and furniture, but not a car.  He will need to talk to the personal property office about that as soon as he has verbal orders.  It can take time to set up, so you still may end up with a relative overseeing the packers.  There are also ways to be paid for doing the furniture moving yourself.  Check the PCSing group, not very active, but the same people are here and there, and you can get an idea of the process from reading the posts.

I'm having trouble finding the specific school number, closest I can get is the TSC (training service command).  (honestly, you can get mixed results as a spouse when calling, either they are super nice, or no one knows a damn thing... hope you have a sense of humor and some patience)
