Hi, I'm Courtney! I'll be leaving to head to Great Lakes on May 1. My rate is EN and I am married. I was wondering about some of the best places to try and get stationed after A-School. I have heard that since I am married then going overseas won't be an option for me and my spouse right out of A-school. Is this true? If it is true what are some nice state side places to request? Also if my husband wouldn't be joining me overseas right away would the navy be willing to send just me (he would pay his own way to move after making sure his business is being run properly with out having to come back for about six months)?

supernavymommy: With all due respect, the three ladies replying to most of these posts are "veteran" moms and or sailors/retired Navy. I've been "hanging around" on this site for only a year, and the advise and comments made by lemonelephant, Anti M, Craig and Bunker QB have helped me personally get through the past year. When my son PIR'ed in May of 2011, he told me that he was very well taken care of and very satisfied with everyone he came in contact with, including the medical staff. Granted, he did not have his wisdom teeth pulled, but he was very sick (which is NOT unusual) with the SR crud and almost failed the battlestation test due to being so sick. His fellow ship mate's made sure that EVERY member of their ship made it through...a true testament to the outstanding training our sailors were given during their time at RTC.

Anti M, Bunker QB and lemonelephant are volunteers on this site and spend countless hours answering the questions of us mom's, gf's, wives etc. with the patience of saints. I feel they deserve MUCH more respect than I'm reading in this thread, but that just my opinion. Just something to think about. :-)

i am sure they are all wonderful but when a mom wants let people know what might happen to them what does it matter to you and the rest of the world?

why have this site then if they are going to come down on us moms.

great I'm so glad they help but then let us vent ,it is not a reflection on them it is on the recruiters.

also i don't have a complaint about the drill sergeants or bc or the navy....people need to be told what might happen to them. we have wonderful ins and he waited a yr to go in so we could have taken care of it a year ago......thats all and thats it.

supernavymommy - Don't take this personal, but do you have your head up your @ss.?  j/k

Why is the heck would you want your wisdom teeth taken out before boot camp? Geez, would you rather have a personal dentist that might remove wisdom teeth maybe once a month, or do you have a dentist that removes 40 in a day?  To me, I'd rather have someone that is so use to it that they can do it blind folded.  It's just a routine procedure.

The rumor of infection and pain is a bunch of crap.  I'd much rather use a facility that is routinely inspected by the Inspector General (IG) than a civilian dentist that isn't inspected at all.  If he was in a lot of pain, then he must have not gotten hurt much when he was a kid.

I work with a lot of deppers who go to boot camp (100's).  Not once have I heard they they wished they had their wisdom teeth taken out before boot camp.  In fact, they all are so happy they they got them taken out while at boot camp since it breaks up the training, and they get a couple days off. In boot camp the recruit is totally stressed about everything.  To get a 2 day break on your 2-5 day is a welcome joy. Wisdom teeth are usually taken out ~2-5 day of training.

While all the others that already had their wisdom teeth taken out are cleaning the head, marching, PTing  you are laying in your nice rack (bed) getting a well needed rest and getting your batteries recharged.  Why subject yourself to getting yelled at for not marching correctly, or not having the head cleaned well enough, when you could be just sleeping the day away?

Why would your son want to bust his butt even harder, while others are sleeping in?  It's not like you're going to learn something on those days.  Too many recruits would have to make it up.  So it's just a "make work" day.  To teach your son what a "make work" day is, have him go into your front yard and tell him to dig a hole 2 feet wide, by 2 feet deep.  After he's done, tell him to fill it back up.  When he ask why? Just say, it's a "make work" day, and just wanted you to do have something to do.

Don't fool yourself.  The dentist in boot camp are awesome!  They are the "specialist" that know exactly how to perform the extractions.

btw:  Again,  I'm not dogging you.  I just enjoy funnin'  around when I post.

I figured he was complaining to his mom just to vent.   Probably did just fine in front of his peers.   Moms are just a soft touch.

Craig: LMAO!!! You totally made my day! The photos are PERFECT....as usual.

Again, to you, Anti M, Bunker, lemonelephant, Denise (aSeabeemom) and many others, I have total respect and admiration for all that you do for ALL of us here. Like I have said, I've only been hanging around for over a year, but what I have learned from all of you will last a lifetime! Thank you. thank you, thank you!!!

well look up the moms that have posted their sons teeth got infected while they are there and most people i have spoken to would rather do it at home so the can take their time healing. while in bc they are stressed out scared that they won't heal in time to continue bc so they won't be recycled.

ronny and anna posted the other day their son had an infection from his teeth being pull there.....so much for the great drs.

don't take it personal i hope i never meet you..........

WOW. I do realize how stressed our kids are while in bc. I don't think you have a clue or an appreciation for what this website really does to help moms with genuine questions and concerns.

Your negativity and attitude towards people you don't even know is downright scary. This is only my opinion, but both are not welcome here. As far as meeting me, why on earth would you think you ever would. A comment like that is pretty hard to not take personally, but I have much better things to worry about than you and your comments or look up moms posting about dental issues.

CRAIG: TOTAL head up a**!!!!

Craig- Do you think we scared her off? I hope not. This "fun" could go on forever!!

She's a REAL piece of work!

If you figure out the stats of how many people have issues in bootcamp from getting their teeth out and how many don't, than set that side by side with the civilian stats.  I Will bet you big money the USN is WAY less.... people see what they want to see...example...you buy a new car, and all of a sudden you see that car all over the place.

If you go over to the Ship 5 group, you will think everyone gets kicked out of bootcamp for something or another, when really it is a very small number.

Think you need to send this photo to RTC PAO, so they can put that on the sign heading towards the base :~}  Yes they really do have one of these to help maintain traffic...BUT people don't pay attention to it.

Not that it matters but both my sons had all their wisdom teeth pulled in high school. Yes, we paid for it. Yes, it took longer than 2 days to recovered - hmmm - maybe the boys were taking advantage of softy mommy. Personally, I think 2 days is too short of a time. I am sure it could be done - it' being done everyday of the week. Looking back, we were a bunch of ninnies. LOL. Sailor went into Navy after college - so records showed wisdom teeth extracted.  Younger son went to West Point right out of high school - I don't recall having to inform the Academy of the deed.  Of course, that was 6 years ago.  Going to through the depper program is way different than those days. Here is the bottom line.

1)  If your recruit feels better having them out before he gets to BC (and you can cover the expenses), go ahead and have them taken out - just informed the recruit ahead time and have the surgery done with plenty of time to spare. Can't remember the precise cost but I believe it was between $1500 to $2000.

2)  If your recruit can wait until BC, you'll save some money (enough for airline tickets for a few people).

The Navy trains their physicians and dental specialists very well. However, the recovery time is sometimes just not enough.  My son broke his ankle several years ago.  His surgeons/doctors were great.  His commanding officer was desperate to get him to get back on the sub.  My son did his job well. In the Navy, if you do a job well, not only would you get to do that job but also any other job that may need to be done.  He is suffering from some after effects. I honestly do not believe he has healed properly.

Anti M,, lemon and the "old girls + Craig" are all available for a mutual back-patting virtual lunch, dinner, coffee.  OK, ladies, where and when?

LMAO to Craig and QB...once again you have made my night!

Bunker...you name the place and time, I wouldn't miss this for anything!!!!  :-)
