Hi mlewis, my daughters Ship 12 Div 148...I'm so anxious for that letter too...  Can anyone tell me if the SRs can receive items, in the note on the form letter she asked for a scarf for her hair and lotion (small).

Hi there Rainy,

They can only receive letters, greeting cards, calling cards and photos, and those need to able to fit in a standard envelope (or greeting card envelope).  They are not given much room to store their items and they are prohibited from having many items. Something such as the scarf would have been sent home in her box if she took it with her. I would not suggest sending it (unless she somehow got permission from her RDCs to have it sent.) Lotion, and any other items allowed (even hair items), she would be able to purchase at the NEX (navy exchange store). They make periodic trips there so SRs can replenish their supply of other necessities such as shampoo, socks, etc.

Thank you for that answer, i was pretty sure she wouldnt be able to receive anything, I dont even know why she asked.  How about I put some of those perfume samples out of the magazines in an envelop and mailed it tho....lol. My daughter is/was a diva type before BC...and she is clearly in uncharted territory...I'm sure her skin and hair are minor issues at this point.  I really cant wait to hear from her tho...miss my babygirl so much.

LoL, yes definitely a new territory for any recruit! Not sure about the perfume samples. May draw attention to her (the scent I mean) and as a recruit you want to remain "under the radar". By now, I'm sure she's too tired and busy to really care about how her hair looks or how she smells. ;D

Seems like your daughter's division and a couple others were kinda last minute filled, meaning they had to wait a while longer that most recruits, because they had to fill out the division before real training was started. So, hopefully you should be seeing a written letter from her this week and even possibly a phone call. Typically, week 3 you get the "I'm still here, I'm surviving" phone call, haha!

Just keep writing those letters every day. If she was real into some show or anything, keep her updated on whats going on on the show (just google it if you don't want to watch the show). If she likes jokes, write some jokes in there or include little clippings from the comic section of the newspaper. :) Any little bit of home makes them happy.

Hello Rainy ~ looks like while I was away at work your questions were answered.  Yeah I think by now lotion and a scarf are not on the priority list!!  I'm sure they all have learned to adapt with their new way of living for the next 5 more weeks and a couple days!!  Keeping my fingers crossed for a letter for us all soon!!

Michelle~

Thanks Michelle, after watching the BC videos, im pretty sure...hair and nails are the last thing on her mind too now.  That form letter was probably written before they had a chance to go to the Exchange.  Anyway, today is 3 weeks out, I hope I hear something today. Im keeping my fingers crossed too.

Sending positive waves your way ~ we received a call today for more research questions from our daughter RE: security clearance.  She said they are getting mail every day (has received mail that we sent over the weekend already), but the mail to us will take longer take a while b/c they only get Sundays to write, of course after all their "chores" are done and less time if you are in leadership roll like my daughter.  So keep the positive mail going to your daughter ~ I know it has helped mine.

What information for the security clearance? like more addresses?
are they able to open the mail they have received

Yes more addresses and dates!!  I call it "research" calls for her security clearance!!  As far as I know they are able to read the mail, she just says she doesn't have alot of time to write b/c of her leadership duties.

What dates? My SR only asked for addresses he didn't say much i was upset and didn't catch everything

He may not have needed dates ~ it just depends on information that applys to each SR. I'm not a pro at the military life ~ this is my 1st go around too. I do feel your pain and sadness of not being able to see or talk your SR everyday, but one thing I can recommend is to stay positive in the letters and the calls ~ I promise you it will ease the pain and will help your SR on the other end and he along with the other recruits need all the positive vibes we can send them.
