Can someone tell me if our recruits are allowed to bring their own eyeglasses in BC or do they have to wear the ones provided. I know contacts are out of the question, but I keep hearing conflicting answers about this and need to know if we should purchase a new pair of glasses for him since he wears contacts now.

I believe what has happened is that the Navy changed the "Birth Control Glasses" they were getting to a new style called 5A(?) and maybe that is where the confusion is coming from. I would think that the recruits would still be required to wear the standard Navy issued glasses, better durability etc than their own glasses and easier to replace or repair if needed.

Sorry I can't give you a more definite answer. I just know my son was issued new glasses when he entered in February.

They have to wear the Navy issued glasses in boot camp.  Trust me, they aren't as bad as they used to be :-)

Once He's out of boot camp, he can wear contacts, the glasses they issued him, or glasses of his own choice, as long as they aren't overly flashy or out of regulations (nothing too "trendy", or in bright colors, etc...)

Thank you for the reply. Appreciate it.

The new glasses are said to have a “hipster, Buddy Holly vibe

Ok, thanks for sending the pic. I thought he would have to wear theirs. There not too bad!

When he is getting close to graduation you can send him his contacts

Oh thank you for that! I will find out exactly when I can do that! So he can wear his contacts for the graduation ceremony?

My sons in boot camp now. Left 4/11. His navy friends told us we could send his contacts for graduation. I thought his glasses would've been in his box when we got it. But they weren't.

Yes, he can wear either his contacts or his own glasses for the graduation ceremony. I think (not positive) that you can mail his contacts to him a week befor his PIR.

Thanks so much for the reply!! This is what I am hearing a lot.

My son's bigger concern was during the first few days while waiting for his BC glasses. Said he couldn't see hardly anything and kept calling chiefs by the wrong rank because their sleeves were a blur. Did a lot of pushups in those first few days.

My SR will be leaving in 2 weeks for BC and I have been hearing different things about him bringing his own glasses for the first week until he is given the BC glasses He doesn't own a pair of glasses, only contacts. I understand the first week is a lot of processing and he is near sighted, so should we buy him a pair of temp. glasses for the first week or not waste the money. They are not cheap as he will most definitely pick out designer ones. Kind of worried he will get caught in a situation where he can't see something clearly and maybe even get into trouble. Sorry, I think I'm more worried about this than he is.
