I either need advice or I just need to vent.

My son has been working on getting into the Navy for well over a year...probably a year and a half.  I feel he's getting the run-around from his recruiter.  He took his ASVAB in November or December 2011 and got an 81; he's been waiting for a MEPS date ever since.  He has a medical waiver for strep throat (?!) that's expired twice.  Yesterday his recruiter told him to meet him at the office today and when my son got there found out the recruiter was in Richmond (we're in Virginia Beach).  He calls him almost daily and the guys always busy and says he'll call back but never does.

It's not only upsetting it's starting to make me angry.  My son is 21 and wants to take care of this himself, and I'm letting him, but its hard to not get involved especially with the recruiter he's got.  I wish I could give the recruiter hell.

Has anyone else gone through this?

We had a similar experience with our 23 year old son. They were after him hot and heavy in High School but then after a few semesters of college and a number of odd jobs, he was ready to go into the service, and they just strung him along for a year. I finally got annoyed called and intervened and asked if I needed to have a Sr. Officer call to get this moving. We then had to write waivers for medical, but at last he finally got to take the ASVAB.. and then they figured out they had given him the wrong test (Officer vs. Enlisted). Another month buy then!!! It all worked and he signed up, only to wait 6 months to go to Boot Camp. We even knew the process since my Husband was in the Navy and works for them now as a civilian. Note He wasn't over weight, was athletic, is emotionally mature and tested well. I agree that they can be selective now with the economy and with many veterans coming back there is less need. I finally had to back off and let him be an adult and to work this out for himself.

Well, my son went in on Monday and told his recruiter he was disappointed and felt like he was being strung along and not being taken seriously.  His recruiter told him that MEPS wasn't his decision and that when he got the go ahead he'd tell him.  He assured him he wasn't being strung along.  My son mentioned the Richmond incident and was told that recruiters don't know until the morning of MEPS which recruiter is going.  My son told him it wasn't an excuse, he could have called him or left him a message.

I'm not sure how much good he did, but he felt better.  We're still in waiting mode but I'm glad he went in.  I'm proud that he stood up for himself.  I realize there's no hurrying the military, so I'm just praying every day.

I am from Virginia as well. I am not sure if you have found a good recruiter but if not the office I went through is great. Within 2 weeks of deciding to join the Navy I had taken my Asvab and finished my processing at MEPS. The office is located in Chesapeake but its worth the drive if hr can make it there for the meetings every first Tuesday.  My Recruiter is Petty Officer Doyle and the office number is 7574882823.

Yikes, It is much harder to get into the Navy than I ever thought. My son had a similar experience. The wheels of progress move slowly. My advice is for you NOT TO GET INVOLVED in calling anybody. Much as I wanted to also, it would somehow take away from what your son is trying to accomplish by having his Mom intervene.

By the way, my son is two weeks away from PIR and graduation from Great Lakes. Do not give up.

Hang in there.

My son had a difficult time as well. His first recuriter was just like the guy you are dealing with. It took Kevin almost two years to work it out but the thing that chagned for him was that his original recruiter left and he was assigned to someone else. The second recruiter was great. I would suggest that he speak tot he chief at the navy recuriting office and see if he can be assigned to a diferent recruiter.

I am so sorry to hear this i can understand your feelings. why not encourage your son to seek another recruiter

My daughter, went through the same thing, but only with Another branch...after a year and a half of the same thing your child is going through, she went to the Navy and got signed in with in three weeks,The other branch's  problem was a debt waiver, now i would tell him not to say any thing about the medical waiver if he decides to go to another branch, sorry that you have to go through this, but totally understand.

Virginiamom...the same thing happen to my son.  So I decided to go with him to the recruiters office. Got there the door was closed. Air Force recruiter walked out and it was all up hill from there!!! My son has been in the Air Force for a year and a half and he LOVES it!!!! Now my daughter is in the Navy but she didn't have any problems with the recruiters. Don't give up!!!!

I'm sorry you have had this situation. I guess my son was lucky in that he is working with a great recruiting staff. He met with his recruiter for the first time at the beginning of April and just went to MEPS on Monday and signed on. Lucky for me his date for BC isn't until February of 2013 so I have some time to unwind the duct tape I put around that umbilical cord the day he was born :) He's pumped and can't wait to go but he knows it'll go fast (too fast for me but I'll survive). I guess recruiters are like any other workers in a service based industry..there are good ones and then there are bad ones. I could tell you a horror story about the Air Force recruiter that we were working with that eventually turned us to look at Navy.

My son waited for over a year also.   The day came for him yesterday and he got sword in in brooklyn and just left this afternoon for great lakes.

It was a long wait but he finally went.  You know you want them to go and want them to go, but when they go its devestating to the whole family.

I would say the most important part for your son to do is to keep in shape and no drugs of any kind.  This way when they do give him a ship date there will nothing stopping him.  My son went so many times to the recruiting office to make sure that he really wanted this and also his body fat he had to work on a little.

I also did call the recruiter many times and asked about the holdup and was told it does take this long.  So hang in there.

printer....Welcome to N4M's. The next 2-3 weeks will be the hardest and then it will start getting better. Are you on NavyDads as well? That site is good...not as active as this one but does have lots of info.

If you want to, you can call the recruiter in 72 hours for your son's address. It may be a bit different from the one on the form letter but I suggest that you post it on here and let us tell you if it looks right and how to write it. Also join   http://www.navyformoms.com/group/bootcampmoms.

Soon you'll get your form letter with the grad date and then you can join (or form) your PIR group....lots of support and info there.

Looks like your PIR date will most likely be July 13 but don't make any plans till you get the form letter.

What is PIR date?
