i have a question that i need to ask someone who is married to a sailor or will be, or is a sailor
this is my first blog so hang with me.
me and my boyfriend are new to this military thing, he said before he left that he wanted to marry me and that we would be married or at least engaged by the end of the year.
so my question is: if we want to be married, in the best time possible so that i may join him in his travels or at least be able to live with him asap, when would be the time to do it? to plan it, we are planning on doing a justice of the peace, then later after all of his duty's are finished we will have a wedding then....
any thoughts and helpful hints are welcome :)

thanks :) im worried now how would i even get into the place i live 5 hours away so id have to go there to get the form and then rsvp the day to get it done with him there...idk even what to do with the DEERS thing
the best time to get married is going to vary based on the school. Since he is already in BC I wouldnt suggest trying to get married on PIR weekend its beyond stressful and they are typically told not to. What is his MOS (job) going to be. where is he going to A school? those questions will help determine this. Even if you get married there is always the chance he could get unaccompanied orders overseas. If he is E3 or below he cannot take dependents overseas no matter what. They try not to assign them to married sailors under E3 but it happens. you want to get married and in the system before he gets his orders issued that way when he gets them they will be accompanied or if they overlook it they can fix them.
he is going to be an mm (machinist mate) and his a school will be in chicago
ok you might try and see if there is a group for their a school and see how long of a hold they have between checking in and classing up (they wont start a school right away) Do you know how long his A school is? Typically most schools have 3 phases. Phase 3 is usually the best to get married during due to having more freedoms. but if his rate tends to get orders during a school then its best to do phase II. Find a group for A schools for Great lakes to learn specifics about phases (sorry my sailor was pensacola so it might be different) As soon as he checks in he needs to start asking about getting a marriage chit in and approved. He will need to get that done. Also start googling info about getting married in Great Lakes. Look up the info for marriage licenses and the county clerk. (Its s good time to start learning how to use google to figure stuff like this out bc lets be honest we all know how boys are with important information ;) lol) Now since he is already in BC they will not pay for you to move to Great lakes. If you do thats on you. and for him to live off base he has to fill out a live-ashore packet during school. Now once you get married (I would suggest probably doing a JOP wedding having a ceremony later) he will need to get you added to his page 2. this will add you to DEERs. Then your ID will be your insurance card. Getting you in the system is important bc thats how they know you exist pretty much. Then he will get accompanied orders if the orders can be accompanied
8 weeks i herd before hand so im really not sure but i think for him it will be 2 months
what is a JOP wedding please tell im looking all this stuff up and printing it out to remember and document it
okay ill send him a letter and let him know
Well just bc that is how long his school is doesnt mean thats how long he will actually be there. My husbands a school was also 8 weeks but he could have been there as long as 6 months. his rate is generally really full so the classes fill up fast and they class up faster than a lot of rates I know.
JOP is Justice of the Peace. Pretty much you will go in fillout the paperwork at the courthouse or wherever its done in IL, then a judge or clerk will do the vows and witnessing and whatnot and it will be filed that way.
all in one day?
but what about getting the license don't you have to show up together first then go to the jop together also??
you will need to research for that county. Where I got married we walked in engaged walked out married 30 minutes later. But that was in FL. there are different rules for different states. most states yes you go in fill out the paperwork and go back later. you can also look into getting it waived for military duty. yet again you will have to research that info for the state.
Just google it. marriage license in whatever county Great Lakes is in. which you might have to google too. just look for the official government website for the most up to date information.
