So my husband's grad date is June 29th, and I'm wondering if anyone can lend advice or tips on traveling out there? I understand that O'hare in Chicago, and the graduation is in Waukegan? I don't think I'll rent a car so are there any other reliable ways to get around? Any advice on which hotels and such would be great! I'm getting nervous because I know the 29th is going to be here before I know it! Thank you thank you thank you!

Keep in mind when you get a cab to agree on a price before you get in. They will screw you over...they all say they give you and Sailors a good deal and than when they go to drop you off, they will say..no that price was per person not for everyone in the cab. Yep...this is a Navy town and the pray on people like you all who come in for PIR...they know you will pay what ever...than they tell you it is a good deal when it really isn't.
A taxi from the airport to the hotel is gonna be expensive!! I's suggest trying to see if anyone else is coming in on a flight as you at a similar time so you can maybe get a ride with them/sharing a cab. If you are in your PIR group on here, make a discussion or comment on the wall that you are looking to share a ride into waukegan. When my sailor graduated I was able to find a woman on the same flight as me that rented a van and gave me a ride all the way to my hotel! Even took me out to dinner :) If not, get in touch with Sarge 847-212-0246. He has shuttle company and likes to help and reach out to military families. He puts together a schedule every week for PIR travelers and tries to group people together so you can split the costs of his shuttles. As for hotels.. Just get one near the base! I stayed at the great lakes motel (Cheapest one at the time!) And it was pretty dingy but, I didn't mind. The staff was friendly and the free shuttle to PIR got me there quickly. Book your flight ASAP. If you use Southwest you will have to fly into the other airport.. Midway which is an extra half hour or so from the base. Or... you could fly into Milwaukkee which is about the same distance as Midway I believe... Do some research so you can find the best price!!! Good luck :)
Well I wanted to take the train from the airport to the hotel which was like $8, but my husband's aunt (who I was traveling with) isn't as experienced with trains as I am, so we took a cab, it was like $80 to our hotel in Lake Forest (which was a little farther than Waukegan I think, but we had a car for the rest of the weekend.) The train is definitely a doable, cheap option if you don't mind a long ride (about an hour & a half, although the cab ride was pretty close to an hour too). Once you're there you don't need a car to get around really, there are plenty of taxis around to get you where you need to go! We flew Southwest, which might be a little more expensive but it was about the same to us. Southwest has refundable/transferrable tickets and also allow you to check up to 2 bags for free, so for us it was the best option! Just google hotels, there are so many in the area, and a lot of the offer PIR packages. We stayed at a Hampton Inn in Lake Forest, which is relatively new and very nice. But I work for a hotel so was able to get a rate that made it worth it to stay a little farther away!
