I was talking to my Gregory (my sailor) yesterday and I told him how glad I was that his schooling is only 9 weeks (he's going to be an AM). He responded by saying "will see" as if the time was flexible.

So my first question is can A school take longer than the time it says it will up front? If so, how long could he be there for? (maximum time) What determines if they stay longer at school?

Then I told him well at least you will be able to come home when your done. He said "I don't know how soon they'll let me come home because sometimes after you finish they put you in holding." I have never heard of this before.

So my last question is What is holding (not sure if that's the correct term)? How long can they 'hold' you for? Why would they hold a sailor back from going home if he's already finished A school?

I hope I explained myself clearly :) If anyone needs more info plus post and I will gladly answer them. If anyone else has questions about their sailor in A school please don't hesitate to post below.

Thank you!

When they first report to A school, they go through "indoc", classes which introduce the base policies, liberty phases and so on.  Then they have to wait to get enough sailors to fill a class.  This could take a week or two, even the self-paced courses go through in classes.  After A school, they receive orders to their first command, possibly with a C school first.  Some of them do get their orders before school is over, others must wait because of various reasons.  They cannot take leave and go home while waiting for orders.  This varies a lot, with some rates waiting a week or so, others can wait months.  While on hold, they stand duty and work during the day, maybe office work, but probably cleaning or maintenance.

You can't mark a date for A school ending like you can for boot camp.  It is very much "hurry up and wait".   How long can they hold them?  As long as is needed.

Oh that is wonderful! lol The military life teaches you a lot of patience it seems. Gregory just graduated RTC June 1 and today he is going through indoc. Which means we still have a long ways to go. :(
What is C school exactly and how do you get picked to go to it?
Thank you for all the info!

Flexibility, yay!

C school teaches a specialty.  Some rates don't have many C schools, some have very long ones which the sailors go to immediately. Technical rates tend to go to C school right away.  Looks like AM has advanced training, but they may be assigned later, when they have some job experience and have acquired E-4.  The specialties are assigned depending on the needs of the Navy/their command

Here's a list of AM C schools (can't say how current it is, but should give you some idea):

Thank you a 1000 times! lol I think I know more about Gregorys rate than he does.  muahahaha!
Pretty soon I will be military savy ;)
