Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello

My Son is leaving in 2 weeks and we have a question on Form 1198A. In the START for Future Sailors it says to bring with him the completed dirc deposit sign up standard form 1198A. All we can find is for 1199A....is 1199A the correct form?

Also, does anyone know of a good site to print a General /Health POA and should a mention of the HIPA be stated?

There is a typo in the books.  The form needed is Form 1199A.  One source for the form is https://www.navyfederal.org/pdf/publications/Treasury_1199a.pdf.  

The DEP Guide at http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/noru/html/downl… indicates the following on page 17:

"PAYDAY AT RTC

Everyone in the Navy is paid twice a month by direct deposit to the financial institution of

their choice. In order for this to occur, you will need to take an already completed Direct-

Deposit Sign-up Form, Standard Form 1199A to RTC. Most banks have copies of these

forms. The financial institution will need to fill in section 3 of the 1199A prior to your departure

for RTC. Ensure you take your checkbook and ATM card for your account to RTC."

 

If your Future Sailor plans to sign up for Navy Federal Credit Union, then he does not need to bring the form.  I suggest he use NFCU because his deposits will be made a day earlier if he does, among other reasons.  If he plans to use another account, he could take a blank check and a blank deposit slip with him. 

Thank you lemonelephant....I thought so. I have this form. Thanks for confirming the typo for me.By reading this form the information requested seems like we should open the account early...what do you recommend? Address ...would be Chicago address right?  Thank you for your time:) 

The address he should use on the form is his permanent home of residence.  You would only use that form if he has already set up an account with a bank or with NFCU and wants to use it for the Direct Deposit.  If he does not have a bank account already that he wants to use or if he plans to set up a new account with NFCU, then he can do that at the RTC and does not need to take the form because they will help him with it there.  My Sailor is happy with NFCU.

 

There are several discussions on POA and medical POA within the Discussions in the Forums.  Click on the Forums tab above and then type Power of Attorney in the search box at the top.

Also, be sure to talk with him about how he wants to handle hearing about something bad that happens while he is at BC (death or serious illness of a family member or close friend, natural disaster that affects yor family.....).  We were blessed and didn't have any, but my Sailor decided he should be told afterwards unless it was the death of me, his father, or his sister and then he was to be notified through Red Cross.

If you have an ex, another thing that you will want to talk with your Future Sailor about is who he will send "The Box" and the Form Letter to as well as the names of the 4 people to list on the Access List.  My ex had indicated ahead of time that he wasn't going to be able to attend PIR, so it was not an issue for us.  My son sent everything to me and I called my ex and let him know his address when I got it. 

Everyone should discuss the 4 names regardless of thier situation, but when dealing with parents who do not live together it gets even more interesting.
