Hi Kathy, nice to meet you.  My Sailor is also in Bahrain on a minesweeper, he just got there a couple weeks ago.  I'm in Southern California; what area are you in?

Rita

Hi Rita,

My son left San Diego on June 16 . I am in Illinois. Is it your child or spouse?

Kathleen

He's my son; he left San Diego on June 15th with several other crews.

Hello. My son left San Diego on May 15th and is on a minesweeper. I know the name of the ship but not sure if it is ok to say. We are from Erie, PA.

Hi mbb - I'll bet our Sailors were on the same plane flying out of SD that day!  And I'm not sure about being able to name the ships; seems kinda silly, since Navy Facebook pages, etc., have run stories about the minesweepers arriving in the area.  But it doesn't seem right to say, either.  Sheesh,,,, lol

Hi Rita. My son left last month so he has been there for about 6 weeks already. Not sure when his crew will be back but prob next year some time! He seems to be adjusting but it is very different and hot! LOL He has been in since last June. He left for boot camp last June 20th. It seems like just yesterday. He has only been home once, for last christmas but we went to San Diego in April to see him before he left. My daughter fell in love with San Diego! I wish we could say which ships and crews they were on but ya never know who is watching and I don't want them to get in trouble but I agree there are stories everywhere about the ships arriving so what the heck! LOL

mbb - sorry, got my months mixed up!

I'm sorry you haven't seen your son much; it's so hard!  Our Sailor has been in 4 years, so we are more used to the separations.  We are grateful for the good job he has, but it's sad to see him be apart from his wife & kids for so long.  Thank God for email, Facebook & Skype!

our sons r on the same ship!! :)

I am wanting to send my son a care package or just something that he can hold in his hands from home. He says he doesn't need anything though. Any ideas?

Kathleen

My son says the same thing Kathy. I know he said they don't have very much room in their rack for anything extra but I always want to send something. I keep him in stock with all his toiletries. I just sent a package with shampoo, lotion, body wash,  toothpaste etc. I did send a couple of his magazines also and gum and Lifesavers. I always like to add a card or too also or picture. I think them just GETTING a package is excitement enough to them! LOL

We have sent homemade jerky ( which got a request for more from the crew), gum, and a few of those bandanas that have gel crystals sewn into them. They soak these and wear them to keep cool. Also some family pictures and I have thought about a subscription ( or maybe just an occasional copy) of our hometown paper. I have also sent the mail and magazines he continues to receive at home.
My son is also on one of those ships, he left CA end of June and has been there a month now. Sadly, VERY little contact. Seems they've been doing long underways and he's not around Internet very often?
