Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Please note! Changes to this guide happened in October 2017. Tickets are now issued for all guests, and all guests must have a ticket to enter base. A separate parking pass is no longer needed to drive on to base for parking.

We stayed at Springhill Suites in Lincolnshire. No, they do not offer shuttles. We drove from Washington State so we didn't need a shuttle. We reserved a 2 bedroom 2 bath suite as there were 4 of us and at the time I thought our son would be able to spend more time with us. They changed the "flying out to A school" policy while he was at RTC!!! I had reserved the room for the entire weekend, and when we discovered we wouldn't need it for Sat. and Sun. night they cancelled those nights at no charge and without any hassle. The hotel was wonderful, clean and QUIET!!! Let them know your are there for PIR if you make reservations there. They have a full blown breakfast every morning and in indoor pool.
The drive is totally freeway to RTC and takes about 15-20 minutes. I highly recommend it.

Conny, Great Lakes Navy Lodge price is 65.00 a night no taxes. Call 847 698 1485 they will give you all information you need .

The room was around $125 per night. That was for a 2 bed, 2 full bath suite (small kitchen but everything you need!). There is also a pull out bed in the living room. Sleeping 5 shouldn't be a problem at all, and much less expensive than getting 2 rooms! For us it was worth every penny. They also have regular rooms for about $80 per night. They also have weeknight dinner Mon-Thurs. I don't know if it's free as we didn't eat there for dinner. Breakfast was great!

any suggestion for familie of 5 ... being on a budget need hotel 4/27 thank you alot, my husband is also retired army if that helps any ?

I just saw that your PIR is 4/27. We were there last year for our son's PIR 5/6/2011. I totally agree with tylerslynne!! Just being there for your Sailor and having your family together is the most important part. Have fun!

I just got back from my fiancé's graduation and I stayed at the Crossland Extended Suites in Waukegan. It's not glamorous but it's close-by (about a $12-$15 cab ride) to the base, and there is a free shuttle the day of graduation, running from 0630 until about 1330. I believe I paid around 40-45$/night.
It was such a great experience to be there for, I wouldn't worry too much about your hotel. What's really important is that you're there for your sailor :)

I agree Residence Inn was great, they were wonderful with assistance, accomodations etc. It is about 3 miles from base. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bath suite. Also had a pull out sofa, we did not use. From Residence Inn it is about 5 minute drive to Walmart, The Sarge Meet and Greet and a few basic restaurants.We had rental car, but found the shuttle thru Sarge easy to use, dropped us at gate, did not have to worry about parking. (We had snow the day of PIR in February). Only tough part was after PIR, everyone is trying to get shuttle at same time. Basically shuttles are minivans. We found a lovely restaurant in Lake Forest "Southgate". was about 20 minute drive but would highly recommend. you can check out their website. They did take $10 off our SR's meal. Even in the snow it was an easy drive.

I would recommend you to either fly into O'Hare or Milwaukee since Midway (Southwest only flies to Midway btw) is a bit far and there can be some traffic that can make the commute to the Great Lakes area at least 1 1/2 hours. O'hare can take between 25-30 minutes and Milwaukee is about 45 minutes drive south. Also, there is Enterprise rental car located across from the Navy Base on Hwy 41 and Buckley Rd. close to the Navy base hotels including Navy Lodge, Days Inn, Red Carpet Inn, Great Lakes Motel, Sleep Inn. If you rent a car at Enterprise by the base, you'll save at least $50 on Chicago and Cook County and Airport taxes for 2-3 days.

I'm more than likely flying up by myself and I'm trying to figure out .... where do I fly into? How do I get to the hotel? do I need a car rental? etc etc etc..... love the advice.... keep it coming!! My sons PIR is 8/31 and I think I need to be finalizing something!!!

I think Residence Inn is absolutely the best bet. We stayed at Ramada Inn and were not impressed. The hallways were dank and in need of renovation. The rooms were better - but too far from any good restaurants, etc.
Residence Inn is closes to base.
