My son's group is Ship 04, Div 818.  PIR is 8/31/2012.  I'd like to know how much time they get to spend off the base for PIR.  Should I plan to spend the whole weekend?  After bootcamp he goes to pre-dive school, also in Great Lakes.

Also, is the ceremony in the morning?  Should I travel the night before?  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Karen

My son has PIR on 8/31, too.  :)

If he's staying in Great Lakes for A school, he'd have daytime weekend liberty.  After PIR, he has to go transfer to the school, which could take hours.  You'd either have to wait for him, or go back to hotel and wait for him to call.  Ceremony is at 9:00 a.m. - people get there EARLY though - like 6:30 or so...or earlier, in some cases.

You'd definitely want to travel the night before.  :)

There's a group for PIR 8/31 - you should join - all kinds of information there:

Thanks for the help.  See you in Great Lakes!

If your son's A school is NOT at Great Lakes, you will have approx. 7 hours with him starting immediately after PIR. He will need to be back at RTC for the night, he will know the exact time, and he CANNOT be late!! He will also know what time his bus leaves for the airport, and which airport. My son's bus left RTC at 4AM, and that's late by RTC standards! His flight left at around 10:00AM. You can meet him at the airport. You need to meet him BEFORE he and his group check in (they are grouped together depending on where they are going), as you and anyone with you will need a visitor's pass issued to everyone at the time he check's in. Make sure everyone in YOUR group has proper ID.

We didn't know this at the time, but you do NOT have to stand in the security line. Your Sailor, in full uniform and with his orders, and whomever is with him go straight to the front of the line, again, have your ID and visitor pass ready, and they stop the "regular line" to get your Sailor and group through security first. Then you can hang out in the USO center. The one we were at at O'Hare was very nice. Quiet, restrooms, computers, vending machines half the price of those on the concourse. Your Sailor will know what time and where they need to be for muster prior to their flight.

YES, you need to arrive in Great Lakes the day BEFORE PIR. As CookieGVB stated, PIR starts at 9AM, and they don't wait for anyone! This is the Military! Have a great time, the ceremony itself is breathtaking.

Thanks.  What security line are you referring to?  Is it to get into the PIR?

She is speaking of the Security line at the airport if you meet your Sailor at the airport to see him off to A School, which does not apply to you since your Sailor is staying at GL.

Thank you lemonelephant. I really put a monkey wrench into confussing this poor mom by not understanding her complete post. Sorry!

We have each other's backs.  :o)

Yes we do! :-)

That's OK.  I thought you may have meant the airport, but I just wanted to make sure.  I really appreciate all the help.

Thanks for this information. It is so helpful!

http://bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide.pdf is the Family Guide with lots of information for you.

Arrive at your hotel the day before PIR.  Arrive at the RTC on the day of PIR as close to 6:30 am as you can because there will already be a line.

You have stated that your future Sailor will be staying at GL, so plan to leave late Sunday or on Monday.  That is Labor Day weekend, so it is possible that those staying in GL will also get Monday--no guarantee yet on that though, so you may want to stay through Monday evening or even Tuesday morning if you are able.

He will check in across the street at the TSC and then call you and have Liberty until 9 or 10:00 pm, but will have to be back in time to get to his barracks.  Liberty on the rest of the weekend will start at 6:30 or 7 am and go to 9 or 10 pm.

Since you have joined the PIR group, you may want to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Mom's, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here.  There is a lot of information and support for you in your PIR group and those groups.
