I received a call today from Jesse. A letter and a call.....it was like Christmas!

Wow, this has been an emotional day.  First my mom was rushed to the hospital, but glad to say she was released and all is well for now.  2nd a very close friend of the family went to Cincinnati for treatments for luekemia and ended up having a heart attack and died at the hospital.  3rd one of my co-workers (her grandmother passed away) and I attended the viewing.  The saving grace was getting a call for our son tonight, the timing was wonderful, because I needed to hear his voice.  He sounded good.  Said the first two days of boot camp was quite interesting, his sister asked if bootcamp was worse then me on his case and he said (as expected - I was worse) with a laugh... AND I had to laugh when he said he was IRONING.  I had him repeat it just to make sure I heard him correctly.  I'm so glad all of us are getting calls and letters now, it makes our time away from them much easier.

MamaG-so sorry to hear about your friend. It must have been quite a shock but glad to hear that your mom is okay. Wasn't it wonderful to hear your sons voice?  My son's GF called us after he talked to her and she said he "sounded older". I guess he must be eating good because he said he gained weight.  He sounds like he's doing okay and he isn't regretting his decision to join, which is what I was worried most about.  Well, unless they do something to rate another phone call I guess we won't hear from them until the "I'm a Sailor" call. Can't wait.

Thanks for the sentiments and yes, getting to talk with our son for 20 minutes or so was great and helped ease the pain that our family was feeling.    I was surprised that they called this early, now it's going to be about 5 weeks before we hear from them again however, I'm like you I hope and pray it's the "I'm a Sailor" call.  My son sounded like he was actually enjoying it for the most part and like you mentioned we're just glad he isn't regretting his decision to join.

 Jodi-Josh's Mom,

I got a phone call yesterday as well!! I have been talking with your SR's girlfriend, and we mentioned our SR's last names to each other, and they know each other!! They both received letters from us about the same time when we asked them if they knew each other, so cool! He said they talk when they get a chance to, and that they are always making jokes so they have something to laugh about!!

My son is a jokester so I hope he is behaving himself. I send him a joke every time I send him a letter just to break the monopoly. I think I mentioned you to his girlfriend when our SRs had just left for bc so I'm I'm glad she has found someone to talk to closer to her own age. I just wrote him and mentioned where the moms and girlfriends on here are from and asked him if he knew them. It would be great if they all became good friends.

Hello Ladies - Got a long call from my son yesterday evening.  It was so good hear his voice. He said I would be getting a few letters all in one envelope probably today and they would have "all the details".  I was so wanting a letter or a call, now that  Ihave gotten a call, I'm not really sure I should have wished for it so hard. Maybe I'll feel differently once I read his letters.  He sounds OK, but there were a few things he told me that make me worry.  As I Mom, I do the best worrying of anyone!  He did say that P-days were an absolute nightmare and that he would NEVER EVER want to go through that again. He says he's made many friends from all over the country.  The food is just fine and there is a lot to learn.  He says the time goes by pretty fast and it is more difficult than he really did imagine. He sounded the same as he always did.  I think he's just at that stage of BC where they are really testing them and they need to be a team and he's feeling like they aren't moving along as well as he would like them to. From what I've read, that transition takes several weeks and working as a unit is something that they really have to perfect.   Our call got cut off or dropped at the 29 minute mark so we never said a real goodbye, but he has gotten all our letters and was happy to hear all about things at home.

My SR had to test at least once a month so he was in pretty good shape but I think he was still surprised at how hard it was. I think it was the P-days that he hated the most.  He wasn't too forth coming with information on his day to day activities. I guess I'd better prod him to give me a little more detail!

I finally got around to getting signed on here.  My son is also ship 04 Div 818.  I got 3 letters and a phone call all on Wednesday - It was a very happy day.  We knew he would succeed at bootcamp but it was great to read it then hear in his voice that he is happy.  He too was very aware of the hard work but I think it surprised him...probably the lack of sleep it the part he was not prepared for.  He is working hard and we are proud.

Welcome SailorMom64, glad you found us. It sounds like your son is adjusting to bc. I'm sure that eases your mind knowing that he isn't stressing out about it. I think the lack of sleep is bothering my son too but he is used to getting up early but it sounded like they didn't get to sleep too many hours at one time and that would have to be a pain. What is your son's rate?

Hello.  My son is a rescue swimmer and is evidently with your sons at bootcamp.  We received a letter last week like many of you.  He told us that he gets to pass out mail.  He also said he loves seeing all the shining faces of the SR's who receive mail!  I love reading the posts on this page.

Welcome queenanne, I bet your son loves his job since he is probably the most popular guy there haha. Of course it may be a disadvantage though if he has to wait to read his letters until after he passes out everyone elses.
