Answers needed regarding A School for Married Sailors

Hi everyone,

My fiance and I will be married a couple of months before he leaves for boot camp. He is going in as a CTN, and from what I can gather, his A school is long enough for us to be able to live together for the duration. The problem is, I have no idea how this is going to work. We live in California, so the distance between us and Pensacola, the location of his school, is a bit of an obstacle. What I want to know is, what is the usual procedure for moving a spouse in this situation? I will be either driving or flying with my family up to his graduation in Great Lakes, which would make an easier trip to Florida, but will I be able to join him immediately or only after a certain phase? If I have to go back to California for a while to wait, will the Navy pay to fly me or will I have to drive cross-country on my own? Also, what has to be established before BAH can be collected? I need to have something in place to search for an apartment in Florida, but I'm not sure if the Navy will provide any accommodations because he in just in A school. Sorry for the rapid fire questions, but I am totally lost!

Thank you!

The school probably is long enough.  But you won't be accompanying him from Great Lakes, your travel will be from home of record to P-cola. Once he gets to P-cola, he has to phase up and request Brown Bagger status.  While the Navy may move you, and he can help get it arranged, you will need to find the apartment yourself.

The BAH will kick in during boot camp for the location you are in now.  You switch it after your move.  Start saving pennies for a deposit.  Heck, start saving pennies to cover your bills for that first month he's in boot camp, it takes a couple pay cycles to even out the pay and for BAH to show up.  The first check is quite small.

I'm not all that familiar with P-cola rules, I'd suggest joining the group here and get some first hand info from other wives who made the move.

Thank you for the insight. I'll check out what the members of the CTN group have to say about the matter as well. :)

When he gets to p-cola and does what is required to move off base....they won't just give him and you a place to live.  If he wants to live in base housing, he has to request it and may have to be put on a waiting list.  If you move down there before the space is open for you to live in houseing, you will be required to find a place to live.
