I just wanted to say 'Hi' and that I am all brand new to everything that has to do with the Military. My son is 19 and in the very beginning stages of joining the Navy. I am pretty sure he has a while before leaving. He was just scheduled to take the ASVAB exam.
My husband and I are very supportive and proud but I have been emotional. I also have an 8 year old son who idolizes his big brother and I am trying not to seem nervous or anything but proud around both of them. I am proud...but it scares me to have to say goodbye to my oldest son. I am worried about the changing family dynamic, keeping myself together, and keeping everything as ordinary as possible for my youngest son.
My son handed me a pamphlet guiding me to this site for some help and support so here I am, so far just clicking around and reading things.
Thanks for being here.

Hi, I just posted for the first time myself. My 18 year old just left Tuesday. It is SO hard. I've been crying a lot, even my husband was choked up when my son called, but I'm guessing, like everything else, it will get better with time. Hang in there.
Thank you, Sheila. Is it normal to cry alot before hand? I don't even really know when he is leaving and I feel like I have been okay for weeks but today I just can't stop crying. It's been a rough day for me, for really no reason. He scheduled a date for his exam earlier and I just lost it. I didn't lose it in front of him, but I just can't seem to get myself together today.
I think whatever you do is normal. When I dropped off my son at the recruiters 6 months ago just to sign papers, I had to sit in my car for 20 min before I could drive home. For me, I just can't believe he's " grown up" already, it went so fast! I felt like I cried ALOT when he first made his decision to join, then it seemed better for a couple months, the past month has been hard and the day he left and since then have been awful. It seems like I just cry at the weirdest times. I feel your pain!
