Hello Navy friends. I'm taking my first trip to Japan to see my Sailor. Looking for suggestions/hints/warnings/etc. Japan was not on my bucket list before but now it's all I think about. Any info or stories about your trip that you would like to share would be greatly appreciated. My mom will be traveling with me.

What time of year and what part of Japan? It makes a difference on what to pack.
Looks like December. Sounds like for the most part their weather is a lot like Northern Wisconsin.
Yokosuka? Cold, but not as cold as WI. Bone chilling in the wind off the water. Can get below freezing at night, snow is unusual. December is a bit drier than other seasons, but you can get rain anytime in Japan.
Milder than our Utah winters, but I did bundle up because I walked a lot. And our tiny house was unheated/uninsulated, so I was very aware of the constant cold (we had kerosene heaters and slept without heat in the house at night, lots of big comforters).
Misawa? Yes. colder than Yokosuka. Snow, even. Which is why I asked where in Japan.
Jenismer how was your first tripo to Japan?
Hey there (not sure of your name) Me and Hubby are also planning a trip to Japan to see our son. Wanting to go sometime in December. I think I saw your post in the USS Cowpens group and someone advised to check here. Sad to see you've not gotten much response. Let's keep trying, and if you get hold of someone let me know and I'll do the same. My husband said he had NO desire to travel outside the good ol US of A but son mentioned he's homesick and now he's planning the trip! LOL! That's fine with me, I think Japan would be a cool country to visit. Anyways, all I know is that Hubby heard (don't know where) that the Navy Lodge stays full. We've stayed in quite a few and they are all very nice and extremely reasonable in price. We're still trying to get our son to pinpoint a date for us.
Anyways, I wish you luck finding someone to help with this. Need to know good places to stay...and lots of other things.
Stay in touch okay?
Thanx!
Donna
The Navy Lodge is often full, but summer is the worst because more families PCS then. You can't be bumped once the reservations are set, so the sooner you know dates, the better your sailor can plan.
Holiday travel is horribly expensive, avoid New Years in and out of Japan. That's their big holiday, the shops and restaurants close, and air fare shoots through the roof. Early December is better, and November better yet. January is just too freaking damp and chilly.
Hey Anti M:
I see we are almost neighbors...you in Utah me in AZ. Thanx for "friending" me, I'd like to pick your brain about our travel to Yokosuka. Unfortunately for us (reading this post) looks like we will be traveling Dec 28th to about Jan 14th. Hubby is taking off for Thanksgiving so we can go see our families in OK and KS before we go to see our son in Japan, so he will need to catch up at work before we head to Japan. Whew! I'm already tired...lol! Luckily for us, Aaron has an apartment and insists we stay with him. He has a buddy in the same building so if we get on his nerves he can go up a few floors to get away for a while...lol! One question that I haven't gotten an answer to yet is when/where should we exchange money, and are ATMs or Banks easily accessible? From what you said looks like we should pack nothing but warm clothes huh? That stinks cuz I HATE shopping for clothes and living in the desert I have nothing but summer clothes and a few long sleeve shirts to get through the winter. Oh well...Goodwill here I come! Once more queston...for now...which airport is closest to Yokosuka Narita or Haneda? I'm sure I'll have more ?? but I'll save them for another time. Thank you sooooo very much for sharing your knowledge....I appreciate it greatly!!
We are planning a trip in November. Also looking for advice/suggestions. Has anyone stayed in Tokyo at all? Any recommendations? I also have a Navy Lodge question...can we make the reservations, or does my sailor need to make them? I'm eager to hear of your experiences...
If you want to stay in Tokyo, have your sailor make reservations at the New Sanno Hotel. Run by the military, it gets crowded and I'm pretty sure the sailor has to be present (policy changes all the time). Don't let "run by the military" put you off... it is a four star place. Try for the Japanese style suite. Gorgeous. Room rates are on a sliding scale by paygrade, so every service member can afford rooms there.
Very popular, reservations go fast.
Navy Lodges are taking 'leisure' reservations through the end of the year! Just made some today for November...so those of you going in December should be sure to call. I just used the 800 number.
Wow CArol - that's GREAT!....and.....they apparently have changed their procedures on how they do things if they are taking leisure reservations longer than 30 days out. Good for you! That kindof gives me hope that I can make it back to Japan before my son leaves. Finding out at the last minute that I could not get into the lodge kindof through a wrench into my budet planning for my trip because my lodging costs were more than double having to stay in a hotel off base. You will have a great time!
