Hi.  I am the very proud mom of a recruit that is soon to graduate on 8-17-12.  Are there any other emotional moms out there heading to Great Lakes in a couple of weeks?  I am trying to buy airline tickets and am not sure what time I will take my SR back to base Sunday August 19.  Should I take a 5 pm or 10 pm flight home?  I am not sure what time he will have to be back.

Hi lemonelephant.

Thanks,

I went ahead and booked the 10 flight.  Yeah, Im really excited!.  I also went ahead and booked a room close to base instead of in downtown.  I have 3 boys with all of their birthdays in august, with the youngest ones on Sat. the day after graduation.  He is coming with us and we are going to be celebrating our recruits 18th bd, his PIR, as well as the youngest 15 BD, so needless to say a Big Deal Weekend! I really debated on a package trip at a nice hotel downtown (as we are from OK, and would love to see Chicago).  But I didnt know if I had to have my sailor back every nite or if he got to stay overnite with us. So confusing.  Plus downtown looks really expensive, and our room is close to base and has pool, breakfast buffets and looks sort of home like, so I think I did pretty good on plans to be close to base and we can go to downtown if he wants. Do you  happen to know how far it is to downtown from base? Oh, and yes, he is staying for A school.  Im so proud of him, he got a fireman job.

Thanks,

Robin

My son is graduating on 8/17 as well. He has given us some information about what happens after the ceremony, but I am not sure he really knows. He is staying in GL's for A school and was told that he would be unavailable on Friday but then have the weekend off. Reading the responses here, now I wonder!! Oh well, maybe he will call today and give me better details. Can't wait to see him!

Hi lemonelephant.

WOW! It is here.  Thank you so much for all of your support.  My son said he is going to be a machinist mate.  He said he will probably be going to San Diego after A school and hanging out with a bunch of Marines. He is hoping to go to Japan and Australia.  I know he does not get to pick, but I sure hope so.

We have been able to talk a lot this last week (YEAH!)  I also got his pictures in the mail today and I was just amazed at my baby all grown up in his  "oh, so handsome Navy Uniform!" I think he is doing fine:)

We are thinking about going around the long lines for PIR and parking at the metra train station  and walking to the drill hall.
Maybe going to take  the train into downtown also, instead of driving our rental. I heard parking and driving downtown was terrible.  Thought it would be a good idea to get a EL pass for 3 days.  I am not clear on the public transportation yet. I am hoping to get downtown and park free somewhere and take bus or above ground subway to explore the sites of Chicago with family.  I know he wants to go to Navy Pier and shop for watches, phones and computers. We are so excited to come see our son and hang out in Illinois or Wisconsin or whatever for the weekend.

Well,thanks again for everything,

Regards,

Robin

Robin,

How did it work out for you parking at the Metra station? If you did park there, how early did you have to get there to get a space? How far is the walk to the drill hall? Does everyone go in the same gate or do they use multiple entrances due to the volume of people that come? I asked my daughter-in-law if they put a gate number in the letter but she doesn't remember. Our SR PIR is 10-5-12. Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get organized.

Thanks

If you park at train station is it a quick walk to the drill hall? That's a really good idea.
